I'm currently looking to upgrade my monitor and or gpu. I see the aoc q2770qpu going for 500 and it's very tempting but mainly because I want to see what's all this fuss about ips displays having a good lead in picture quality vs TN panels. I tend to watch netflix and the like so it's not only for gaming but the whole viewing experience. I have a benq 2420t I think so it's 1080p vs 1440p.

On the other hand judging by the performance of the 770 in newer games i'm really not liking the fps it's getting as the new games are currently on my list to be played.

So with all this said which should I upgrade first the monitor or gpu?

That's a tricky question.
Personally I would buy the display and turn down the settings a few notches to make the games run smoother and upgrade the video card down the line, since we're already waiting for the big guns (GM200/390X) to show up, it would be wise to wait and see what competition brings us to the table rather than buying a video card now.

I was just thinking about stopping by best buy to see if they have any of those reference 970's in stock. I really don't know what to do really. Push my current 120hz monitor by hopefully going sli or cf soon or just get a higher resolution monitor all together.

I went from an older TN panel to a Dell IPS, and while the colors are better, it didn't "wow" me. I wanted to switch mainly because I am starting to edit photos for print, and the color shift on the TN was making it difficult. But honestly, I don't see much of a difference while gaming between the two. I'm assuming you are looking at 60Hz IPS monitors, and since you already have a 120Hz monitor you may not like going back to 60Hz.

In that case just buy the GTX970.
and as the firebird already said, you may not like going from 120hz to 60hz.

The odd thing is I did actually notice a difference in smoothness when i checked out the ips monitors. Movement was a little slow for my liking, the quality was their but like you said and something I noticed is the "wow factor" was not their. Probably once calibrated it will stand out more. But looking at that samsung 4k monitor, now that was on gorgeous screen tn or not picture quality is amazing.

I would have a hard time going back to a 60hz monitor personally. And I know we can wait forever for new stuff to come out in this hobby but we have freesync monitors and gm200/390x right around the corner. I would hold off the 2 or so months to see what comes on that front.
