i have a 17'' Proview (CRT) monitor that is about 3 yrs old. in the past few days, the monitor flashed and displayed only the bottom half of the screen. there is a bright banded line running through the middle of the screen and nothing else above it (all black). but within a few minutes it would flicker and show the entire screen again. today, however, i turned on my monitor and it only displayed the bottom half of the screen. tried on another computer and no success either. seems weird since i thought monitors last for awhile. does anyone know what happened to my monitor and if it can be fixed

A monitor repair shop should be able to fix it. Somethings wrong with the vertical circuitry. It controls the height of the picture.

My monitor went berserk on me too. It started to jump into a windowed screen mode, like it was not filling the entire screen. I rapped on it a couple times and it would be fine for awhile, then it stayed that way.

I took it to work because i figured it was a mechanical problem, i.e. bad solder joint. Ended up finding it by taping around different areas of the pcb with an insulated tool till I located it and repaired it. I guess if you can hit it and it jumps back to normal, you might have a bad solder joint.

Usually it's the larger components on the pcb that seem to be a problem because of their weight and the fact that they tend to need more power in those areas, which heats up more and causes a solder failure. Be damn carefull if you are going to attempt this!!

i'll prolly take this to the repair shop...or pick up a used one

my brother just suggested this: could the damage have been caused by magnetic fields???
i have my Altec Lansing avs500 woofer sitting on a shelf 4 inches above the monitor and i have two satellites on either side of it...i've seen magnets distort the beam of electrons maybe it could do something like this too after a long time
