Monitor occasionally makes high pitched noise!

I have a CRT monitor that's about a year old. Sometimes I hear a very high pitched noise that drives me crazy. It has to be the monitor since I can turn off every other electronic device in my room and I still hear the noise, but it vanishes when I turn off my monitor. Is my monitor about to explode or am I going insane?

Your monitor won't explode but it may very well die. It may take a couple of years, or it may do it soon, but a high pitched (audible) noise coming from your monitor is a sure sign that something is wrong, and the bell will probably toll on it when you least expect it.

Just to make sure we're clear: by "the bell will toll on it" I mean it will stop working and probably smoke a little bit. There's no bell in there that sounds when it dies. Good luck to you, though 😉.

What part in a monitor is capable of making an audible noise? I was under the impression that a monitor contains no moving parts.

I am secretly hoping that it does die. That would be a great excuse upgrade my screen size, pick up a sexy LCD flat panel, or both 🙂

Hmmm . . I'm running the monitor at 1280x960@75Hz which is well within its specifications. The noise does stop when I change resolutions, but then will come back after a little while. It also gets louder as the resolution is actually changing, but then stops once it is displayed. Looks like I'll start bugeting for a new monitor!
