Monitor not displaying full screen

its bit of eerie:
It seems that the whole screen displayed on my monitor has shifted about i inch to the left:
Each and every new screen starts with a few characters hidden in the left side of the monitor::: The screen is not full, the first few left side characters are not visible: It appears that the window( screen) is not fitting fully on to the monitor:
This has started after installing windows XP today.

please help
 
Thanks for replying: I got a friend to help me out with the same;
It was the centring option which I was not able to locate
