Monitor-no signal

I have a benq 24 inch(about 3 years old). I put together my new pc, hooked it up to the monitor and turned it on and i kept seeing "no signal". I decided to try HDMI over the normal cable(its the white one with 2 sets of prongs and single flat prong). Still the same result. Wondering if it was my vid card i decided to hook up my old PC again and im now getting the same problem with it. Is my monitor bad or is there something i need to do to scan for new input? Any help is greatly appreciated as im at a total loss here.
