Just built a rig last spring and now want to get a new monitor, keyboard/mouse, and small speakers.

Monitor: 20-22 inch widescreen. what companies are good? what should I look for as far as contrast ratio and resolution?

K/M: Laser or Optical?

Speakers: Something simple, 2 speaker system with good sound for the money.

dell is pretty good for the 20-22 inch displays (realy all lcd's) and there prices are very good, also look at samsung/viewsonic, laser is almost always better then optical for mice, as to speakers give a price range and you will get a better response otherwise its hard to say (ie >$100, 100-200, 200-500...)

I'm pretty sure all of the 22" widescreen monitors use the same chi mei 6bit TN panel. I think maybe Samsung came out with a variation, but other than that they should all be the exact same panel. So when looking at the selection, go for which one has the options that suit you most such as height adjustment, USB, speakers, etc....Any of the TN panels will offer the fastest response times that are ideal for gaming.

There's tons of info on LCD monitors in the video section.
This is good reference for 22"
And this is an excellent guide to LCD's overall

I personally bought the Dell E228WFP 22" LCD and I love it and it was very nicely priced as well.

As far as Keyboard / Mouse goes, the Logitech G7 mouse and G15 keyboard are supposed to be top of the line for gaming. I would say Laser is recommended over Optical for gaming.

I'm sorry I can't help you on speakers. I'm far from an audiophile, so I always buy low end 2.1 for my system :)

For gaming Corded mice are better IMHO, I use Logitech G7, MX518, and MX 510 and love 'em all.

As for Keyboards, Corded, and anything that feels good (ie. key location size of spacebar etc. etc.

I mostly game w/ headphones, but occasionally use our Logitech Z230s
