Monitor issues

I replace a compaq motherboard this past weekend with a socket 754 setup, nothing fancy, just an office computer. It is using onboard video.

I go hook the computer up to the crappy compaq 17" crt and it gets to the windows booting display and then the monitor shuts off. I try safe mode and it boots up with no problems. I then change the settings to 800x600 16 bit, yada yada, basically bare bones and try it, same thing.

The next thing I tried was booting with a lcd and it booted up ok. After it booted I hooked it up to the crt and everything seemed peachy. Rebooted w/the crt and it was ok. Did a shut down and then a cold boot and it worked ok with the crt. Supposedly now it is doing the same thing and it will not boot up normally, just safe mode. Any ideas?
