Monitor issues.

I've got a Sony Trinitron P990 monitor which I've owned for the past 5 years or so. It's a great monitor and has been working just fine for me at 1024x768x85Hz. Yesterday evening, I turned my computer on and heard this pinging sound like water dropping onto a piece of sheet metal. I noticed that every time I heard the "ping" my monitor would flash and it would look as if a horizontal line was skipped. This happened at random intervals for a good half hour or so. Then, the monitor suddenly turned off and turned back on and I haven't heard the pinging since. Does anybody have any clue what that could have been? I'm thinking that maybe a capacitor in there died and the monitor was able to bypass it and survive on without it, but that has me a bit concerned. I'm now looking into replacing this massive CRT with a nicely sized/performing LCD screen, but I'd like to know how much time I may have left with my monitor before it bites the big one. Thanks.
