Monitor is toast, recommend me a new one

My 17" CRT is blown. After seeing LCDs at school I might want one since they are much easier on the eyes.

Should I get a 15" or 17" LCD? What kind would you recommend? I can spend no more than $500 or so.

ok - this is my personal advise nothing else.

I wouldn't go down the LCD-route. There are many
reasons but I just say this. Look at major gaming LAN:s.
do they use LCD? Look at serious CAD/CAM stations, do
they use LCD? nope.... say no more..

for 500 dollars I'd by a premium flatscreen (maybe trinitron)
monitor from viewsync/sony/samsung. You'd get a very nice
19'' or even 21'' for that money.

I disagree. IMO, you don't want a huge 75lb 21" CRT on your screen.

My personal recommendation: a Samsung 710T (DVI and VGA) or Samsung 710N (VGA only) LCD.

Text clarity and sharpness is unparalleled, and gaming is incredible on these (12ms) screens as well.

Ok. I can agree with that. If you want/must have/prefer a LCD the
Samsung 710 would be my choice as well. I have a friend that
has one and it's very nice. that 12ms response time really makes
a differance.

STILL - money to money - *I* would pick a 19-21'' CRT every
time! But then I have the space so that's not a factor for me.

The choice is all yours....

I don't do gaming or CAD, so the advantages a CRT may have in those applications is negligible to me. I also live in a small apartment and the 17" CRT I had was crowding my desk - a 21" would be absolutely impractical.

I'll look at the 710N and 710T.

Anyone else have any recommendations?

Ok - LCD is great for limited spaces.

Don't wanna be to dominating here but I might add
that I've read two LCD-monitor tests in pc-magazines
and in those two the samsung 710 won.

This was about 2-3 month ago so I'm not 100% updated
but I think that the samsung still is the best there is for
now. Of course - you could also look at the 910 from
samsung which is a 19''.

Still - if anyone else know any other good LCD - speak up!
