Monitor - Input lag and different monitors

What are the acceptable levels of input lag? I assume there is some room for debate since IPS vs. TN vs. 120/144Hz monitors will all vary.

When looking at a budget 4k monitor I'm just debating if 4 frames is terrible, it kind of sounds like a lot of lag (58ms, g2g was 6ms measured).

Does anyone have a quick ballpark for the monitors currently in use for gaming?

IPS input lag
TN (decent monitor)
TN (poor monitor)
120/144Hz (good-lowest input lag)

Thanks, so 58 ms is actually shockingly high. Good to know, I've been debating a cheap 4k monitor and this is the only (major) flaw.

Do you know what the average run of the mill 1080p TN monitor is? Is there a huge difference between them and IPS?

Yes, 58ms is pretty high. Maybe the monitor has a game mode? I'd say most TN monitors are class 2 (under 30ms as classified by tft}:

Class 1) Less than 16ms / 1 frame lag - should be fine for gamers, even at high levels

Class 2) A lag of 16 - 32ms / One to two frames - moderate lag but should be fine for many gamers. Caution advised for serious gaming and FPS

Class 3) A lag of more than 32ms / more than 2 frames - Some noticeable lag in daily usage, not suitable for high end gaming

All the monitors listed in this review are under 40ms:

I've never noticed input lag, but apparently my U2412M has 9ms average input lag, 20ms max. This is an IPS monitor, but I've heard most IPS monitors have higher input lag?

Thanks for the info and links.

The Samsung 4k screen has pretty high input lag. I'm guessing most of the 28" 4k screens share the same panel? The dell 32" is somewhat better, but it's $1500+.

Interesting, so those two don't seem to have bad input lag.

The samsung has been on sale and has been catching my eye, but I was actually looking at this one atm (AOC).

I've been anxiously waiting for the next wave of new displays to come since each wave has brought the price down significantly. If I knew it wouldn't drop for a year it'd be easier to buy but it's dropped like a rock in a year (18mos?) from $3,000 to $600. It's seemingly on the cusp of another price segment drop. Since none of the cheap displays are special, other than the amount of pixels, I'm biding my time.

This is the best info I've found, too.

Input lag and response time are not the same thing. Some IPS monitors, Dell in particular, have gaming modes and are quite fast overall. Also, monitor companies lie about screen response rates.
