Monitor "hiccups" every now and then...

Sometimes, my monitor will "hiccup" out of no where. It's almost like a mini-degauss or something...

What does this mean?

This can happen with older CRT monitors (more than 5 years old) when there's a lot of dust on the circuit board or there's a lot of moisture in the air (and it's been pretty humid lately in most places). It's high voltage discharge across a spark gap. You may even hear a pop when it happens. Most modern CRTs don't use spark gaps anymore.

This can also occur, however, when a monitor is dying.

I'd be prepared to replace it.

Lowering the refresh rate a little might stop it from "hiccup"-ing again. I had that same thing start randomly happening to an older monitor that was running at a 100Hz refresh rate(had been for a few years), and I lowered the refresh rate to 75Hz, and it hasn't "hiccup"-ed since(over 2 years now).

Also, try using aa powerful vaccum cleaner, especially if you have a cat, as their hair gets in everywhere.

My old KDS was only 4 years old when it started doing that. It eventually got really blurry / bad geometry.

Is it really true that using a vacuum to suck out dust from the monitor is OK? What about the static electricity?
