My Sony PS400 19" CRT has controls to change the geometry for the picture this way:

...------
../.......\
./.........\
-----------

(never mind the dots)

But take that image and turn it 90 degrees, and that's the problem my monitor has. Why is there no adjustment for it?

Controlling the side pincushion is relatively easy, this is why all monitors have side pincushion, trapezoid controls. Top and bottom geometric distortion is another matter. Top and bottom distortion is a function of the deflection yoke design and how it is mated and aligned to the CRT during assembly. There is no simple way to adjust top and bottom geometric distortion. If it is bothering you I suggest you contact the manufacturer.
