monitor geometry

i just bought a monitor for my father, and i have some questions about the geometry. it is an apple monitor (sony trinitron on the inside) which cost me $40. it is pretty much in perfect condition. however, when i put the monitor geometry back to what i assumed were factory defaults (there is a recessed button and a second button that work when pushed at the same time) there are some geometry problems at the top that can't be fixed using the regular parabola control, as it only modifies the left and right side. is there anyway to change individual aspects, perhaps from software? this monitor was barely used by the university that i attend, and it was a pretty sweet deal.

thanks,

Hmm, in my experience if the problem is at the top of the screen most monitors have no controls to fix that, and I haven't seen a software fix (but that doesn't mean there necessarily isn't one). Does it kind of look like the aperture grille has sagged or something?

how do you check to see if the aperture grill has sagged? everything else seems alright, the upper left and right sides are just bent a little. i changed the refresh rate to 72, and that fixed most of it. thanks.

Usually the top of the picture is wavy (i.e., not straight)

Ahhh, sounds like you were pushing the limits for resolution/refresh. I bet if you lower the resolution one notch lower the problem will disappear. Is this a 17" monitor? Or 15"? Or ?

its a 17 in sony trinitron. the furthest i went was 1024x768 at 75 hz, which is hardly pushing it wiht this monitor.

That's true! But if it's old, some times there is deterioration, even if it's not used much.

well, i fiddled some more, and installed drivers from sony's website (to replace window's drivers). i pretty much have it how i want it now.

thanks for your help, workin',
