I'm looking to upgrade from my current LG 22" 1680 x 1050 (it's pretty old). I still want to keep it and use it as a second monitor.

From the title I obviously want something that's going to sharply render text, icons, etc. as well as provide reasonable gaming capabilities. (I don't have any problems with my current 60hz monitor). I also prefer one that can rotate to portrait for coding and browsing web pages.

That said I'm torn between the 24" Dell UltraSharp U2412 and shelling out some extra cash for the CrossOver 27Q S-IPS LED. Obviously a large 27" monitor with that resolution would be sweet. But I'm concerned if it's worth the risk of build quality (I'm a college student, it needs to be somewhat sturdy) of the Korean panel. Also, I only have a GTX 460 1GB; I want to upgrade to a GTX 760 but not till I have some more cash on hand, so I'm worried about my ability to drive it in the mean time.

I suppose it's worth noting I have a $100 gift card to Best Buy so it brings the UltraSharp down to around $198 with tax.

Has anyone used both or either monitor and can speak if you think one will fit my needs stronger?

The Ultrasharp Dell monitors are great...I'm very happy with mine.
Also it has a very sturdy, rock steady stand with up height adjustment, tilt etc and that lovely H-IPS color with internal processor.
You will need a fair bit of graphics horsepower to run a 27inch.
