Monitor for Gaming LCD vs CRT

I am going to purchase a computer from dell to take to college and have been debating which monitor to get.

1. Dell E171FP Digital Flat Panel Monitor, 17 inchMonitor, 17", LCD, TFT, Midnight Gray, 1280 x 1024 Pixels, 0.264 mm Pixel Pitch, Anti-glare with Hard Coating, 15-Pin D-Sub Input Connector

2. M992 19-inch CRT MonitorMonitor, 19" Diagonal and 18" V.I.S., CRT, Midnight Gray, 1600 x 1200 Pixels, 0.243 mm Dot Pitch, Anti-glare and Anti-static, 15-Pin D-Sub Input Connector

I really want the flat pannel due to space conservation and the dam cool look, but doubt its ability in the dvd playing and online gaming area. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Go for the LCD... just because dorms are too freakin small. CRT would be better but you'll learn to live with it... like i have. 🙂

The last time i played games with an LCD, the results were not pretty. It looked as if the graphics were "running." You might be able to get away with slower-paced games, such as RTS, and slower-paced FPS like Counterstrike, but Quake 3...nooo way!

Go with the LCD - we're all in university to do work, and even if it doesn't play games/DVDs well, it's incentive to do more work 😉.

LCD are poop for gaming. If you want to game and watch movies get a CRT. My brother in law lugged a 19inch trinitron to his dorm and it dominates his whole desk.... his roomate has one of those tiny little imac round thigns with a 14 inch lcd and all sorts of desk space...

guess where they BOTH do homework? on the bed or at the library....

Get the CRT

Ok i have a laptop LCD (IBM, year old) and it really cant play games (bad video card, nothing to do with monitor), but i think the dvd playback is fine on it. i remember my old laptop and it couldnt run in anything other than its natvie resolution. at least the newer ones are usuable in non-native resloution.
