monitor flashes on, then goes super dark

I'm trying to fix this monitor...when I plug it in and turn it on (on both the VGA and DVI inputs) the monitor comes on perfectly, and then goes super dark. The image is still visible, but you can only make out borders and such. This leads me to believe it's a power problem, but it's a nice monitor, so I wanna try to fix it. Any ideas as to what may be going wrong? What's the best way to open up an lcd without damaging the casing?

If you can still make out screen details but its very dark, then you have a back lighting problem. It may be a power issue (cutting out after the back light is on for a few seconds) or it could be a problem with the backlight itself. Either way, it will be a hard thing to fix.

Thanks for the info. I took the screen apart last night, but didn't go deep enough to the backlights to get a look at them. I think I'll try again soon now that I know what to look for.
