Monitor does not come on... How do I fix this?

Okay.. this is pissing me off..

I have an HP W2207 22" lcd monitor.. Most of the time I turn on my computer, the monitor will not come on. It just says 'no display connected' for both the analog and DVI connections. I only have the DVI connected. It is set to DVI by default.

When I turn my computer on after it has been off for a while, it will always turn on the monitor (or bring it out of standby).

When I reboot my computer, it will come on some of the time. After I reboot after heavy gaming, it will never come on until I turn off the computer and wait for a long time (perhaps for the graphics card to cool off?)

This happens with my Core 2 duo 1.8ghz with 8800gts computer.. and with my Core 2 duo 3.0ghz with 4870 computer..

This happens when they're overclocked or not overclocked.. For now, I am not overclocked at all.

Could it be a problem with my monitor? This is seriously driving me nuts.. I should be able to turn on my computer and the monitor should come on every time.

EDIT:

Here's more info.. I get the post beep every time. The system is stable - I promise. If my monitor doesn't come on, I can wait a while and remote desktop into my computer.

If it's doing it with two different computers, and other monitors don't have problems with those computers, then it'd almost have to be something with the monitor. Have you tried using a different cable to connect it with? You might have a bad cable that's giving you an intermittent connection. If that doesn't work, you probably just have a bad monitor.

It sounds like there might be a bad solder connection in the monitor. When cold, it makes good contact. But when it warms up, a connector expands and pulls away from where it's supposed to be. Then when you reboot, it is no longer making the connection and refuses to come out of sleep mode.

I would definitely try KikassAssassin's suggestion of trying a different cable first. You never know, it might fix it. But to me, it sounds like a bad solder connection somewhere in the monitor.

I had a 19" Fujitsu-Siemens PVA monitor, that started dying on me with very similar symptoms. When it was cold it would start (some weeks later it took several minutes for it to start - was blinking etc). But after using it and turning off I had to wait for it to "cool down" (usually a few hours) before it would come out of stand-by again. Then I left it running for like a week without turning it off and after I turned it off it never came back from stand-by (I guess it just completely melted or something 😛). I gave it to a shop for repairs and they fixed it in 2 days - didn't cost a lot either (1/15 of the price of a new one). The issue was what Creig wrote about. That was a year ago. This monitor is still going strong at my parent's house giving wonderful colors (duh! PVA :heart🙂 and running without a single issue.

But yeah, try a different cable first. If it won't help, eiher RMA it or give for repairs.
