When my computer wakes from sleep, there's a redish color gradient near the bottom--everything is tinted pink. After fifteen seconds or so, the effect has faded and everything looks normal.

This just started recently. Is it a sign that my five year old monitor is starting to die?

Presumably the monitor uses CCFL backlight and what you are experiencing is classic CCFL warm up effect to get to full brightness/spectral content. CCFLs do lose intensity with age (and in fact that's how they are specified, eg, NN,NNN Hours till 50% brightness reduction). Generally you got to have a lot of hours on a CCFL before you would notice something to the effect that you are, except there is a significant reduction usually in the first several hundred hours of use. (After that the brightness reduction is more gradual with time.)

I wouldnt worry about it. Try recalibrating the monitor and increasing brightness to as much as you can stand after thorough warm up.

Next time get an LED LCD.

The LEDs also decay over time. Depending on the quality of the LED, they can last longer or shorter than a tube. We see it a lot in LED light bulbs that have been in use for a couple of years. The new ones (even old stored stock) are always brighter that the neighbors.
