Monitor dims until no video is displayed

I have a Viewsonic P95f+ that would dim to the point of blackness at random times. Basically, I'd be looking at the screen and slowly the screen would get darker until it appeared to be off. The monitor would still be getting a signal from the video card and the led would show green so it was still powered. The OSD doesn't display either.

The only way to fix this problem was to completely power it down and remove the power cable for about 24-48 hours. The display would work fine after that but it was a crapshoot as to figuring out how long it would last. Sometimes it would last a day, other times it lasted a few weeks.

Now, before I try to enact what's left of this monitor's 3 year warranty (7 days left), I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem before. Also, because I had bought a new monitor a few months ago and retired this Viewsonic, it has had a chance to "fix itself" and currently works, but I can't tell for how long. I'd rather not spend the money on shipping just to have Viewsonic say "we can't find anything wrong," and send back a dud.
