Monitor died, looking for replacement suggestions

The 4 year old 17" AOC Spectrum monitor I was using died. I'm using a 15" model right now (definetly a switch! 😛) until I can get a replacement.

Any recommendations on a 17" or 19" monitor under $150 - $175? I don't have a lot of money to spend (22" LCDs won't fit the budget 😉), but want a dependable monitor that can at *least* do 1024x768 at 72Hz or more - anything under 72Hz hurts my eyes. Optimally I'd probably like to work at 1280x1024, but all the monitors I've used can't do more than 60Hz at that resolution.

Newegg has some inexpensive 19" (1280x1024) monitors, but one has to wonder if you "get what you pay for".

Anyone have recommendations?
 
I would spend little more and get the 19" Nec 930SB-BK from Dell for $241.96 shipped. Good price on one of the best 19" CRT IMO.
 
My first recommendation is to buy a monitor @ a local store (or at least from an online shop that will not charge you shipping on an RMA).

I mention this because if you look at the reviews of any of the CRTs, you will see that some are excellent, and others (from the same MFG) are very bad.

I had first hand experience when upgrading from a 17" to a 19" CRT. I went with the viewsonic P95F+ and bought locally simply because I wanted to see the monitor in person before purchasing. The first one I took home was OK, but had some convergence problems in the corners (pretty typical). 1 month after I had it, it crapped out and I got a new one. My second one was much better overall than the first, and is still going strong (it's only been a few months though, but this one has much better performance).

Anyhow, buying locally will save you shipping in the first place, and will really be good if you have any clarity problems.

Overall, I really like my P95F+, although I would have bought this one if they had had it locally (well, I would have at least taken a look at it):

Also, my last point is to remember that your primary interface with your computer is through the monitor, so it makes sense to go as high end as possible because that is probably the largest factor in determining your overall computer experience.

I am running 1600x1200@85Hz BTW, and overall my screen is very clear, with the exception of those slight convergence errors in the corners (not very noticeable though, and much better in my second monitor than in my first one).

2001fp or other lcds, you wont regret it, if you dont have that kinda cash, go for a nice 17"lcd, dont get 18 or 19, there useless, cause they do the same res as 17, cost more, and dont look as sharp. crts bother my eyes at any refresh rate too, and my dad now has glasses because he used his crts too much (15+ years with MANY hours a day will do that to anyone) he now has an lcd and likes it a lot
 
OfficeMax has had "StarLogic" CRTs on sale here and there. Like $150 for a 19". Sounds a little too cheap for me, I prefer NEC or something more name-brand, but it could be an option. I've never seen one in person. Wal-Mart has KDS stuff often too.

Only thing I'd be uneasy about is support(warranty), since most of the times manufacturers give you the runaround if you buy an item that they sold as oem to a manufacturer, but that is of course such a great tempting price.

Don't worry. Dell runs their discount and coupon deals often. You can catch the next one.

As for support, Dell is one of the best online vendor when it comes to purchasing monitors. They have 30 days total satisfaction guarantee and will replace your monitor if you have any problem with it. Dell picks up shipping both ways. You won't have to deal with the manufacturer. The only online company I know that has comparable guarantee is Monitorsdirect.com. But Dell is usually the cheapest if you can catch sales and use coupons.

I'm sure there'll be other deals - but even 271 is better than the price I've seen is

It's also not the 30 day thing, it's the "after the fact" if something goes wrong in a few months, who has the responsibility of replacement, nec or dell. (This kind of issue usually comes up with hard drives, you pull a drive that *company* sold to dell at a discount in exchange dell takes care of warranty and the manufacturer won't support you.)

After 30 days you would contact the manufacturer for their warranty. You would do the same whether you bought it from retail store or internet store.

This is of course how it normally works, just the possibility of them having made a deal with nec in this case to handle replacements instead of nec could potentially be problem when dealing with oem's.

Obviously the best thing to do would just be to simply email and find out if the full manufacturers warranty applies.

That is also a nice option if you're willing to deal with refurbished.


To the OP. You might want to take a look here for some monitor options. They seem to have decent ratings and in some cases the monitors are cheaper than newegg after shipping.

17" monitors can easily be had in the low-mid 100 range, granted 19's aren't much more expensive - really depends on your budget.

Trust me - I feel your pain, I'm using a 15" monitor in 800x600@85hz, it's max is 1024x768@60hz and that's painful after using 85hz for so long!

It really comes to the choice of a high quality 17" or mid quality 19, either one should nowadays be able to handle your desired res of 1280x1024@85, but you might want to refer to specs (or personally view the monitor if possible.)
