I've got a 19 inch sony crt monitor. Today when restarting it made a loud noise and then stopped working. Called sony, they say they have to repair it and without the reciept (which of course I cannot find) they want to charge 300 something dollars to fix it which is about what the thing cost to buy it. Anyone know if it would be possible to fix it myself or am I better off just buying a new monitor?

I really doubt you could fix it yourself. Monitors are also pretty dangerous, so don't go poking around inside. The charge held by the caps is more than enough to kill you.

It is probable that one could repair the monitor for less than 300 dollars. However, if you don't have any knowledge of electronic repair and troubleshooting, much less the test equipment, you probably won't get very far.

Your better off getting a new monitor. Even after a year of not being plugged in theres still enough charge in there to put you on your a$$

I've been repairing electronic devices since the late 1960's, and I can promise you that nothing in a monitor holds a "charge" for a year!
