Monitor arm stands: are these dangerous??

I am looking into a pivoting/extending arm stand to lift my big ol' samsung 950p off of my already-cluttered dorm room desk. I'm kind of wary of the clamp quality, however, and I don't really feel like being fined by the college for a broken desk. Does anyone use something like this? Should I be worried that it will collapse or break my desk into a million pieces?

I wouldnt trust it.

Saying that, what type of clamp is it?

Does it clamp directly to the monitor or does it clamp to the wall with a flat table type surface for the monitor to stand on?

I would be more worried about damaging your monitor rather than the desk. Monitor will cost more to replace than a desk.

It's a clamp that attaches to the desk and a flat surface that you place your monitor on. most advertise weight capacities of 50-80 lbs, and my monitor is pushing 45 pounds.

In that case it should be ok :)

Just make sure the bracket is SECURELY attatched to the wall!

Use rawplugs etc. Make sure the wall is brick as well, not plasterboard. If its plasterboard 45lbs will rip straight out the wall.

I haven't seen those units that clamp to the desk, So I can not honestly give a yay or nay on that. But...I do use one of those wall-mounted units with the L-shaped arm and flat- plate base to hold my 21" Toshiba TV in my room. If you hit the studs good, they are extremely sturdy. You can get them at any home-depot, home-base, Mclendons-type hardware store. I think even Fred-Meyer has them if you have one near you.

I don't want to use a wall clamp in a dorm room, and I don't even think the walls are thick enough to support one.

i have a rubbermaid stand that clamps to my desk, and i've had no problem with it holding up a 60 pound monitor.
