Do you want a 30-incher with 2560*1600 resolution or rather a 26-28-incher with 1920*1200?

For 25*16, you really need a top SLI/CF/4870X2 setup to play at smooth FPS and in eye candy modes. For 19*12, a weaker card will do (I guess you'll be upgrading your X800 to a current gen card). 30" also means very small pixel pitch (0.251 mm), something to consider.

I personally prefer 26-28" 1920*1200. IMO, the best monitor in this range is currently LG W2600HP, based on H-IPS panel which means great viewing angles and colors, good contrast and in this case, a moderate price (but still about 50% higher than a 26" TN). Very good reactivity plus no input lag make it a suitable panel for gamers. The ViewSonic VX2835wm and VX2640w are also decent alternatives but both are based on TN panels which mainly means poor vertical viewing angle. However, if you're sensitive to input lag, forget the 28" model, as well as the Dell 2709W, which, if input lag was eliminated, would be one of the best gaming monitors in this size range.

well right now I've been running a VP191b 19" and I've never really had a problem. I think it has an 8 ms GTG response time. how does that relate to input lag? anything at that level or better is fine because I don't notice any lag in my actions.

Response time has nothing to do with input lag. High response time means image blurriness and ghosting. High input lag means that you can perceive that your monitor reacts with a delay to your mouse movements. In extreme cases it's visible even on Windows desktops, and it can be very annoying in fast games. An input lag lower than 16 ms is a non-factor since it's lower than one frame (16.7 ms). However, some displays show an input lag of over 3 frames, which is very noticeable. Check the head-to-head comparisons on digitalversus.

so what monitors have low input lat and can do the big resolutions? I'd like 2560*1600 but if that isn't possible without sacrificing input lag then I can settle of the the lowe res stuff. I'd like to stay 27+

Check out the threads at Hardforum and AVS about the Westinghouse 37". They can be purchased used on Craigslist for around $650. It is the best hardware decision I ever made, and I have no idea why everyone doesn't use one. 24" monitors look tiny to me now and even women think my computer is cool when they see the screen. It also doubles as a nice high def tv, if you dont already have a bigger one. The resolution when surfing the net is crisp and clear. It is phenominal for gaming; Bioshock, Crysis and COD4 look awesome on the monitor.

a 1900 res panel should be okay. My 32" only does 1366 x 768, which pisses me off. If i knew i could find a 30-40" LCD tv that had a DVI w/ 1920 resolution, i would have picked it up. btw, if you can fit a 30" on your desk @ school, a 37" should fit too.

4870 x2 Crossfire
Corsair CMPSU-1000HX PSU
WD 300gb VelociRaptor

Mushkin 2gb DDR2 1066 RAM x4
Core 2 Quad Q9550
ASUS Rampage Formula
Samsung optical drive

I'd be fine with a 27" to be honest. anyone own a 27 or 28 they'd recommend?

First of all try xtknight's excellent LCD monitor thread, there are a ton of great recommendations in there.

Second of all [mod voice on] Please don't bump threads more than every 4 hours at a minimum, and preferably longer than that. Thanks.[/mod voice off]

yeah sorry. I have looked at it but the monitors that they talk about for gaming aren't big enough for me.

There is a 28" at Newegg (HannsG) and it is on sale this weekend for $449 with free shipping. I have been considering ordering it myself. You can read the reviews for it and they are generally very good.

You can either get a 1920x1080 HDTV like the LN32A650, or you can get a 2560x1600 monitor like the XHD3000. The really bad input lag on most monitors comes from built in scalers which are required to display non-native resolutions. There are 30-inchers without scalers, and they will have little input lag at 25x16 but will rely on video card scaling to display lower resolutions, if they will at all. Such monitors also will not work with a PS3 or 360 or Blu-Ray etc.

Input lag may not bother you, and it's possible you won't even notice it, but that's a lot of money to spend without knowing. If you must have 2560x1600 (your crossfire X2s say you must) take a look at the XHD3000. Though it is PVA, the particular brand of IPS the 30" monitors use has similar disadvantages. If you can deal with 1920x1080, and I don't see why you couldn't, an HDTV gives you better total value.

I'll settle for 1920 x 1200 if that helps with the size to input lag ratio. does anyone have good firsthand experience with a 27" or something around that that they would suggest?

thanks for the posts I'm looking at everything.
