Monitor advice: Have a Dell 2005FPW,how much for a decent upgrade?

I know this monitor is pretty old now, but it still works fine, I was just thinking about going to a bit higher resolution though.

Will pretty much anything I buy now, be a noticable upgrade over this? I don't care so much about gaming, the only 3D game I even have installed is Dragon Age. I'm more concerned with day-to-day performance/colors/etc.

I don't have a budget as I haven't even started looking but I don't imagine to pay more than $200 or so. Is this too little to be worth getting a new monitor? And no, not interested in dual-displays.

Thanks

i hate to say it but, pretty much your 2005fpw is a higher quality/better monitor than most of the new garbage out in that size. You would have to spend more than 200 to get an upgrade. What size are you looking at. Dare I suggest a 2408 or 2407? I've seen a few of those at a good price in the forums

The only requirement on size is that it'd be at least as big as what I have now. I guess if it's going to cost me more than that I won't worry about it.

Agreed. Not sure about the new Dell U2410, but IMO even the 2408WFP was a lesser monitor in terms of image quality than the 2005FPW.

it's a great monitor. i have the 2005FPW and 2005FP side by side. both S-IPS screens, amazing. great color reproduction and even good gaming performance. what else could you ask for. i use a 2408 at work and it's okay, might be bigger resolution but i still like the 2005fpw better

200 will just get you a TN panel now a days, but possibly up to 28" if you wait for a sale. That's not to say there aren't better monitors than what you have, but they won't come cheap. I've heard good things about Dell's e-ips 22" monitors so that's probably the cheapest one out there, but not much of an upgrade if you could even call it that.

I'd say the best upgrades from that would be a 30" from dell or an LED cinema display from apple depending how you weigh resolution vs. color accuracy. Either option isn't cheap though so you'd be looking at around $600 if you get them on sale/bing cash back.

Well, there's the Dell 2209WA, but it's the same resolution as your 2005FPW, just bigger physical screen -- which means a coarser dot pitch, to my mind a disadvantage. I'd probably only buy it if your current IPS display were failing in some way. Speaking of age, hasn't the backlight dimmed over the years? Though, considering how bright most IPS monitors start out, this may actually be a plus (up to a certain point, heh).

I thought H-IPS was supposed to be a superior panel technology to S-IPS? The big problem with current e-IPS and H-IPS panels appears to be LG.Display's manufacturing quality control. Every affordable IPS monitor (circa $500 or less) seems to be yielding a disturbingly high proportion of significantly flawed panels (especially colour uniformity).

It may have dimmed some I honestly don't remember, it is by no means dim overall though. Like I said no issues with it, just have a bit of an upgrade itch, and this is BY FAR the oldest PC component I have.

I still love my 2005fpw. I remember this monitor really bringing wide screen monitors to the masses, unlike the far more expensive HP and APPLE equivalents.

I also remember so many people saying "Why would you want wide-screen? 4:3 ratio for life!"

Ah yes, that was right here on this forum.

i personally enjoy having the best of both worlds. mainly because some games i play don't support widescreen and end up skewing the aspect ratio, messing up my aiming/ mousing.

The cheapest upgrade from a 2005fpw is 400-500$+ (Equal to, or even above the cost of the monitor)

i'm confused (mostly as i have a 2005FPW)...

What makes the 2005 FPW better then the new Sub $200 monitors from Acer/ASUS/LG/Hanns. These new ones ones have faster response time (5ms vs 12ms), higher contract ratios (1000:1 vs 600:1), Similar Brightness(300:1), and simlar vertical/horizontal refresh rates (75/83)

Three letters: I P S

You may want to Google 'IPS snob' or 'IPS Nazi' for a counterargument. There was some recent back-and-forth on these forums too.

Essentially 90 per cent of computer monitors out there use TN panels, which are either 1.) atrocities to the eye, or 2.) good enough for most work. They are the fastest (response time) panels, and so best suited to twitch-gaming. For everything else they're generally the worst technology: awful viewing angles, poor colour accuracy (and most of them are only 6-bit colour), 'grey' blacks, etc. Most of the stats you've quoted aren't really helpful since manufacturers don't use an objective standard for contrast, etc; or they're irrelevant (higher refresh rates aren't common and are of limited utility currently).

IPS panels aren't the best at everything (PVA panels can look better in some respects -- most HDTVs are PVA or MVA), but for computer use, they're probably the best overall technology. Many graphics professionals use IPS displays. Unfortunately IPS monitors tend to be the most expensive LCDs as well.

better quality screen (s-ips vs TN) and color reproduction, better build quality probably.

I personally have no problems playing FPS on my 2005FPW.

I have 1. It's nice. I plan on picking more up on ebay or whatever after this thread dies down and the prices go back to normal :)
