Monitor Advice - 4k Now or Wait?

I recently went back to gaming and bought a desktop with a GTX 1070. For a few years now, I've been using a Dell U2414H monitor - 24" 1080p 60hz. It's starting to feel small and I've been thinking about an upgrade. I am very tempted by the upcoming 27" 4k 144hz HDR monitors, but I have some concerns. The 1070 is certainly not powerful enough to fully drive that monitor. Would lowering the resolution in gaming to 1080p (or 1440) feel like I am playing on a 1080p monitor or is it going to be worse? Does the same apply to 1080p movies and videos?

If the image quality won't suffer, I could buy that monitor now and then max it out whenever a powerful enough card comes along. Or if 1080p content will be worse, I might wait until I upgrade in a couple of years. I was also thinking about 1440p 144hz monitors, but I don't like changing my monitors often and I feel like in a few years I will wish that I would have gotten 4k right away. Any advice?

I've never been happy lowering the resolution on a monitor, it just wont look as good. But as far as 1070 pushing a 4k experience, I don't think it will be that bad... you should be able to hit 60hz at least on decent settings. I ran a 4k with my 970 and was impressed how well it did (although I didn't hit 60hz usually), but could depends on the games you play.

But ultimately, I don't think you'll like going below the native resolution, it just looks fuzzy for the most part.
