Moniter Response Time Questions

Can you tell the difference between, for example 2ms and 5ms for a gaming moniter? I have a 275 GTX card for video and wanted to get a 24" moniter and have noticed those two response times on most of the moniters I have looked at.

I had that coming lol...Other than the difference between 2 and 5 can it visually be notice while playing games?

Loaded question. Some eyes are more sensitive/sharper than others. I'd say that with current monitors below about 6-8ms it is not noticeable during gaming sessions by the player. Anyone sitting next to you may notice some slight ghosting because of it but the player usually is so into the game that they won't notice it much if at all.

Probably of more concern today is input lag where what is displayed on the screen is actually lagging behind what the computer is processing. This is of concern only in fast paced games but I'd say that in today's market, this is a bigger concern to gamers than monitor response times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_lag

What mmnno is trying to get at is this:

Do you play lots of FPS games where fast twitch gaming is neccessary? Do you play games where frames per second should be as high as possible?
If yes, then lower response times are what you're after. (2ms in this case)

Or do you watch mostly movies or play strategy games or casual games?
If yes, then a higher response time doesn't matter for your monitor. (5ms in this case)


But honestly... you won't be able to tell the difference between the two except in some rare cases, so my advice is to just get the monitor that you like the best.

Neither one matters, they are best case grey to grey times... look at indepth reviews where they show the worst transition times... I highly doubt anything like that is gonna ghost that much anyways.

If your mostly just gaming i would recommend a 120fps lcd anyways, but thats just me

Fixed. Also, true 120Hz LCD panels do not exist in the consumer segment.

That means that your new panel will be 60Hz. 60Hz == 60 refreshes per second == 1 frame every 16.66 seconds. So as long as your refresh time is less than 16.66 seconds, it doesn't matter anyway.

You should be more concerned with the input lag, which coincidentally, is much harder to measure.

60hz = 1/60 = 0.016 = 16.67ms.

120hz = 1/120 = 0.00833 = 8.33ms.
