The only thing worse than coming in early for a meeting and having it cancelled is coming into the office for a meeting on one of your work-from-home days and having the meeting cancelled.

The only thing worse than that would be coming into the office on your vacation.

I recently had a contract where I couldn't be on the site unless the general contractor was there (building was still under construction). He was scheduled for 7:00 to 3:30, but was never on time. I came in at 7:15 and had to be on my way out by about 3:15.

Plus I billed about 130 miles a day @ 48.5 cents/mile. Nice bonus.

Listen to this man, he knows what he's talking about. I have a weekly meeting at 9am on Tuesdays and it's fricking torture every damn week. Not to mention pretty much the same thing is discussed every week. I have to ingest a lot of coffee to make it through that one.

I hate coming in to cancelled meetings, but my current hours make not that bad to get there a little early, but they do make terrible to leave late. 3pm-11:30pm

agreed. every friday i don't come in since the client has half days summer and many of them work from home. so i rather save 100miles in gas and decides to do the same. a few times i drive all the way in to these scheduled friday meetings only to have one other person show up or completely cancelled. now i make it known if you schedule a meeting on friday, you better give me a call-in number.

its already annoying to have meetings on a half day or have them early in the morning, but god please make everyone know earlier if you're going to cancel so other people can sleep later, can save the gas, etc. not cancel at 8:59am or on a friday morning when people already went out of their way for your stupid meeting.

If you are in a large corporation there is a chance you could have several meetings in a day at all sorts of random hours. If you are part of a global company and have to meet with people in Europe/Japan/etc. via conference call or video conferencing then expect meetings to happen pretty much any time.

in most large global coporations, everything revolves aronud the americna operation. make those people in asia do a conference call at midnight local time, not the other way around

Not if you work for a Japanese company. 😛 Besides, the start of business here is 7:30AM which means a 9AM meeting would not be considered early to me. 8AM... yah I would rather not have one of those on a Monday.

yep. i would never schedule 9am meetings. give people an hour or so to read email, sip their coffee, etc. make them 10:00 and after

Man, I'm beginning to think I work too much. I'm usually in the office by 8, often by 7:30 and work until 6:30 or 7. I only take an hour lunch, so I guess I'm pulling 9-11 hours a day, everyday. That's depressing now that I think about it. No wonder I always feel like I need a vacation...

really i would think its 9-5 unless your company has a strict hours guidelines
when i used to work as an employee, i used to do 11-6, sometimes with 2 hour lunches. those were the days.

I have had a couple of 6am teleconferences recently. The time was chosen because the call included people in the USA, Holland and Japan. Those calls are done from the home office. For one of them, I had the phone on mute and played WOW.

the extra time wasted sitting in pointless monday morning traffic and the loss of sleep.

working over 40 hours does not mean you're a hard worker to companies. i used to work 50,60 hours and worked on weekends. didnt get me anywhere and i didnt get a promotion or whatever. i left that job and now i say screw it, get paid more, work less, and couldn't give a rat's ass about my job beyond the 40 hours because frankly, company loyalty gets you nowhere and they'll come outsource your jobs to india or fire you with a lame excuse when they see a red bottomline for a single month.

9-5 eh? So you bill for your lunch hour when you're out of the office then? Standard business day is 8:00-5:00 with lunch from noon to 1:00. Actual hours are flexible for me, but since pretty much everyone else in the office works 8am-5pm, those are the most productive hours because I can always get the information I need.

Heh. One of my major's requirements is a real world collaborative IT project - sometimes with other schools, sometimes producing real products for businesses, etc.

Anyway, this past semester, that class was doing a collaboration with some company to produce some online banking software. However, Penn State was in charge of the design and MSU (in India) was responsible for the code. I have never seen a group of students get so frustrated. The way the video conference schedule worked out, they had a video conference damn near daily at 11AM, a local general meeting at 6PM 3 times a week, a local team meeting at least once a day, and another video conference damn near daily at 11PM - IN ADDITION TO NORMAL CLASSES. In the end, that's room for about 2 hours of design work a day. Most of them ended up dropping all their normal courses to make room for this. And the Indians were complaining about how slow the design teams were lagging behind - because they were coding and testing ALL DAY between the conferences on one side, and sleeping on the other. They had no normal coursework, nor did any of them have outside jobs, nor did any of them have social lives.

So yeah, I can see how working internationally would suck hard.

i bring my lunch in, eat my lunch at my desk while doing work. or neffing. and yes i do bill them. if i was an employee i would do 9-5. eat out for lunch as well.
