Monday Night Football has jumped the shark

I've always loved Monday Night Football. It was the last chance to see football after all the weekend games were over and it was an excuse to have an adult beverage or two on a Monday night. Now it seems as if football is secondary to the whole show. Yes, show. That's what it is now, a show. They have an attractive bimbo on the sidelines that knows jack sh1t about football but is there to "appeal to women viewers" but she is so utterly stupid when it comes to the game that I can't even stand to look at her. Bring back Melissa Stark if they must have a woman, at least she was hot and knowledgeable. Better yet....stop trying to appeal to women by having a woman on the show. If women don't want to watch football do you really think having a woman on the show is going to change that? A woman either wants to watch football or she doesn't. Does ABC think they can lure women into watching the show just in the off chance that the sideline hottie will give some helpful makeup tip or bust out with a 50 ways to satisfy your man hint? It's football dammit, not Cosmo!!! Another thing that is pissing me off is this new Halftime at the Mic garbage. WTF is that? Do I really need to see the Grammatica midgets singing with Santana? That had to be the worst thing I have ever seen in my life. The only reason I watched is because I kept hoping Carlos would beat them to death with his guitar. Once again....it's football you freaking ABC morons!!! If you really want to keep your audience tuned in at the half maybe you should offer them something they want to see....like oh....a review of the game...analysis....etc...or if sticking to football just won't work for you then show us an Olsen Twins & Coors Light Twins porno. ABC keeps wondering why the rating are down...well let me give them a clue. First they fired the wrong guys from the booth. Al Michaels is a pompous ass. Bring back Dierdorf and Gifford, at least they knew what they were talking about and weren't asses about it. Sorry....Michaels has always seemed too full of himself to me. Madden is doing a good job although there are times I wish he would just sit on Al to shut him up. Better yet someone go dig up Cosell and go find Dandy Don and get them back in the booth. Sure Cosell would probably stink a bit but a rotten Cosell is still better than Al Michaels in his prime. I'm just pissed because Monday Night Football is being ruined. Ever since that Mickey Mouse company bought ABC things have gone down the toilet. Here's a clue ABC/Disney Evil Empire.....football is what people want to see. If we wanted to be entertained another way we would drive to Orlando and shove a broom handle up the mouse's ass. Now that is entertainment

Paragraphs?

Actually, I like Al Michaels. He has a great voice. Madden should be back on Fox on Sundays...he's a bit too enthusiastic to be pumping late on a Monday Night. Dierdorf and Gifford were good. But I think a lot of problems came about with too many lackluster games. Last night sure was far from that!

...not to mention insightful and thorough.

i have to agree, and i'm a woman (admittedly one who watches football like a guy, but still...)

I wish Chris Behrman called every single NFL game I watch. He is the best commentator IMO. I love his sound effects (FUMBLE, whoop!), and his phrases (he..could..go..all..the..way!). GO SWAMI!

Berman would be a bit much to watch a whole game of. In the studio doing the pre or post game is perfect for him. When I'm watching a game I don't need silly sound effects or catch phrases. At times even Keith Jackson's "Whoa nellie, we've got a barnburner here today" was a bit much for me.

True. I love his highlights, though.

My wife and I watch for different reasons. I, like you, love to get that one last game in for the week, while taking down a couple of beers. I have something to look forward to on a Monday...football season should last all year.

My wife watches, because she gets to add another Madden phrase to her list of all-time stupidest things ever said. If you think of him as a moron, and take his commments as such, he's really very entertaining. :)

Madden can be goofy at times...still the king of weird phrases on MNF has to be Dan Dierdorf. I remember watching a game once where he said "that's hard enough to do with a football much less with a sandwich" I've never been able to figure out WTF he was talking about. At the time he said it everyone in the bar just looked at each other in total confusion.

I would have to strongly disagree here. Michaels & Madden are easily the best commentators...it's not even close. Monday Night Football has always been about the show...It's the game of the week...they have to gussy it up. And complaining about hot women on the sideline? Are you out of your fu**ing mind? Don't listen to her.......just stare at her hotness!

Berman doesn't do all that shtick when he is calling a game... That's reserved for the highlights. He is an excellent announcer, and definitely one of the best.

But I mostly agree with everything you said, shiner. (Except that I think Al Michaels is also one of the best.) But it's not just Monday Night...
Watching the pre-game shows used to be about as good as the games themselves for me. But having comedians, political analysts, loudmouthed ex-athletes is making them unwatchable for me. PLEASE get rid of the stupid weather girl... Her stick figure is not even attractive!

if all games are like last night, the rest of it doesn't matter. problem is, they've had some pretty bad games.

what has hurt MNF the most ironically is ESPN's Sunday night football thing. they do all the recaps sunday night and kind of takes away some of the thunder of what MNF half time recaps used to be.

Howard Cosell doing the MNF Half time Highlights used to be a very big and interesting 15 minutes.

That's very true. By Monday night, everyone has already seen all the highlights and more.

MNF has not always been about the show....it used to be about FOOTBALL. There is no need to "gussy" it up with all the crap they do these days. Show us football or change the name to "The Disney Presents Al Michaels, a hot girl who knows jack sh1t about football, a bunch of no talent performers at halftime and oh by the way there is a football game as well Show"

I don't mind the announcers really, I've never paid too much attention to them.. don't even care about Bill Walsh in the NBA. :Q

But I HATE Lisa Guerrero. Melissa Stark was much hotter and sounds like what shes talking about.

And I couldnt' agree more about the "At the mic" thing. Ugghhhh. Get rid of the horse trailer also.

i give that about a 3. Mainly because this post comes after one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history. You could have picked a better time.

And i don't agree with you on Al Michaels

Another cup or two of coffee and you would have scored a "10" on the Rant-O-Meter.

boomer was bad initially, but he's gotten VERY good. he is frequently on WFAN AM 660 here in the NY area and he is VERY intelligent. he really understands the game. i find his comments to be the most "ON" of anyone i've ever heard speaking on football.
