I could also work from home, but that is hard to do with the whole family around (I usually will do work at home after the kids go to bed).

only get holiday pay for the 5th... it's kind of a rip that there's no compensation for people actually giving up their plans to work on the actual holiday just because the precious M-F'ers "observe" the holiday on Monday.

fuck observed holidays... if a holiday falls on a saturday/sunday, I see no reason why people shouldn't be expected to work their normal shifts on the surrounding friday and monday.

I work for a webhosting company. 24/7/365 support... between international clients and just generic systems management, I tend to have the exact same workload every day regardless of whether or not it's a holiday (the only difference being that on holidays there are fewer people around to do the same amount of work as a non-holiday)

I'm normally scheduled to work on Sundays and July 4th isn't considered a holiday because it's observed on the 5th, so I'll be working on the 4th

one thing i miss about working in education. the summer vacations.

Don't feel bad. I haven't had any real time off since Christmas, and I was sick the whole time. Can't remember the last time I got two consecutive days off.
