I have reformated her old 600mhz / 256 RAM Gateway laptop one too many times. I've got all the family together to put up ~$500. She mainly uses it for school work / word procssing / powerpoint / web / some videos.

What i'm thinking
--------------------
- Name brand (Dell, HP, etc). I really don't feel like supporting her system for at least a year ;-)
- needs flat screen monitor
- needs printer
- need 15-1 mulicard
- needs NIC card

Thanks!

It needs a discrete NIC? Won't one built into the motherboard do?

You should be able to find a computer for less than $500 at Dell or HP easily, especially if you check Dell Outlet.

Edit: You may end up popping the card reader in yourself, I don't know how much Dell chargers for that as an upgrade. You could always get one that connects via USB as well.

I think it's just that mom needs some kind of NIC for her broadband connection.

Get mom a refurbished Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with a 1.8GHz dual core processor, 2GBs memory and 160GB HD, for $439
Then buy her Canon Pixma MX700 all-in-one printer with built-in card reader.

It will end up a tad above your $500 mark.
But she's your mom for crying out loud... PONY UP!

BradMAN's GottaDeal.com is listing a $400 dual-core Compaq laptop that should work.

Otherwise, a Dell desktop or laptop should work. Check deal sites and the Sunday paper ads. Newegg sells external card readers for $20 if you can't get one built-in.
