Mom upgraded to a 24" LCD, changed display settings to large fonts

She runs work programs and crap but they all show up as regular fonts. etc. It's 1920 x 1200 so everything is tiny to her. We'd like to stay at native resolutions for the clarity and just increase the font's for everything in every program. I'd like to avoid going to each program and change the views by themselves.

also changed dpi

What OS?

In Win XP, I believe the setting is:

Control Panel > Accessibility Options > Display tab.
Under High Contrast, click Settings.
Under the High Contrast Appearance Scheme, select a scheme from the dropdown list that includes (large) or (extra large) for the font size.
Click OK.
Back on the Display tab, click Use High Contrast.
Click OK.

That is correct! Some programs are locked into fixed frames and cannot adjust font size. I make it a point to get rid of them if they are too.

Being afflicted with vision problems, I know the feeling. I had cataract surgery in the left eye and detached retina surgery in the right. For convenience, I keep a reading glass at each computer. 🙂

You can also go in to Display Properties (Settings, Appearance, Advanced) and select a more readable font for your screen default. I use Verdana, 10 pt. bold.

Most of my work programs (MS Office, etc.) allow one to quickly zoom in by holding control and rolling the mouse wheel. That works on many Internet sites including this one.

which program? and you really set the windows dpi setting in advanced display properties to large or custom already?

xp is old, it doesn't scale well, but it does it well enough from when i used its large font setting. vista and osx scale everything in gui very well.

my experience with fonts messing up in xp is just that parts of the gui sometimes don't line up right, but the fonts remain larger.

I prefer high (120) DPI and then use View/Text Size to adjust - and with that - the Ctrl+ Scroll Wheel adjusts zoom factor in most Internet apps.

Huh?

What's that?

Also my monitor is set to 1440x900 and my mom with our old computer would keep our old 17" monitor at 800X600. As anything higher would bug her. So what would be a good solution?

Use GPU scaling on my video card and use a lower resolution which it would up-scale it to widescreen or with the monitors native resolution use higher dpi like 120? Or what?

You have never tried the scroll wheel on the mouse with the Ctrl key? Works in just about all my apps. Works in this forum!

My suggestion is, use native res, 120 DPI, and then scroll wheel to taste.

My eyesight sucks - cataracts in left, and a scleral band repairing a detached retina in the right - and that is how I manage. Also, select a good screen and menu font like Verdana 10-11 pt bold.

Which would be better? GPU scaling at a low res or higher DPI in Vista?

higher dpi in vista always.

scaling is always bad joo joo esp when dealing with text!!!! big blurry text=horribles. never do that.

and yes you can set minimum font sizes and such in firefox as well.

My monitor is retarded. It won't display 4x3 resolutions without stretching it out. Unless it's a video formatted correctly.

So if a game only supports like 800X600 is will be stretched out. So after getting a DVI cable as I was using a VGA cable. It still won't display 4:3 and give me any black bars on the left and right. So now that I'm using a DVI cable, I get access to the GPU scaling and can now at least scale 4x3 games to 16:9 and have it not look stretched out. However sometimes it's still not perfect but better than stretched out washed out image.
