Traci Redford said she was boarding a Southwest Airlines flight home to El Paso, Texas, with her 5-year-old daughter when she overheard an airline employee mocking the little girl’s name, Abcde (pronounced ab-city). Now the airline has apologized to the mom and daughter in a public statement.

The incident occurred at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif., according to news affiliate ABC7 in Los Angeles. The Redfords were preboarding — as they usually do because Abcde is epileptic — when the Southwest Airlines gate agent started laughing and pointing at the child and making fun of her unique name to fellow airline employees. “I turned around and said, ‘Hey, if I can hear you, my daughter can hear you, so I’d appreciate if you’d just stop,’” Redford told ABC7.
Redford said her daughter was within ear shot and asked her, “‘Mom, why is she laughing at my name?’” according to ABC 7. “I said, ‘You know, honey, not everybody is nice. And not everyone’s gonna be nice, and it’s unfortunate,’”

Poor kid is going to be laughed at her entire life so she better get used to it now.

Mom is an idiot and she should be the one that has to apologize to her daughter for being a terrible parent, and get a legalized name change immediately. Who the fuck names their kid abcde?

I mean, this just isn't right, regardless of what your name is:

What Redford didn’t find out until later, though, is that the unidentified employee also took a picture of the girl’s boarding pass and posted it on Facebook to take her name shamingpublic. But another social media user alerted the mom of the post after reporting it to Southwest Airlines. Redford then issued a formal complaint to Southwest Airlines and pursued it for two weeks but never got a response.

So fuck that employee and whatever happens to them.

Names are getting crazy today and people get really upset if you pronounce them wrong.

"Is Em Lee there ?" (MLE)

"OMG. It's pronounced Emily. Asshole!!"

Talked a buddy out of naming his kid a traditional name but with idiotic spelling to match his sisters name. Kids have enough on their plate to not have to deal with their names being screwed up because mommy and daddy want to be special. I dont condone adults making fun of children for their name, because the kid has no say in it. And the employees should be dealt with according to policy. But this woman is a douchelord for doing that to her kid.

The kid should probably get used to it as early as possible, otherwise she'll have a very tough life. Shame on the mother but that's what she chose for her child. You can't expect anything else.

Maybe I'll name my kid Refrigerator. Nobody better make fun of them.

The kid when gets she older could probably petition the courts to allow her to legally change her name.

I think the minimum age is 16, so they would have to make it through about half of high school before starting all the work of having to change their name. Kids are brutal to each other.

I heard of a woman trying to name her child -a pronounced Dasha.
The hospital refused to put that spelling on the birth certificate.

I mean, sure, that may sound like a 'bad name'...but I'm pretty sure lots of now common names were considered bad decades/centuries ago.

However, parents should think a bit more before trying to be 'creative'. I hate my name, and it did not make my life easy in school.

The "bad names" you speak of were most likely at least phonetically correct.
