------- Mom is in Car Accident - What to do?

thatsright

She just got into a car accident. Car may be totaled, maybe not. Haven't seen it yet. My mom will be fine in a few weeks.

I don't have the title/registration. Do I have to call the Insurance Company? Or can only she? But she is not able to call/sign anything? I live in Massachusetts. I was told she 'blacked out. Though not sure if this is what really happened as no one else was with her in the car.

I feel horrible asking all this, but I'm sure I'll have to ask about the car at some point. BTW, I don't own a car so I don't know what the 'procedures?' are for this??

HELP!

I'd say call the insurance company, I'm not sure how it works but I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. They will probably send over a form for your mum to sign. Hope she's okay!

just call the insurance company , they'll know what to do and be able to contact her when they have to

this happens all the time, they are trained professionals

-call insurance company, tell them what happened/where it happened/where the car is
-have whatever you need from the car taken out
-a few days later an adjuster will come to take a look at the car and will tell you if it's totalled or not
-if it's not totalled they will ask you (usually) if you want it repaired by one of their shops or a shop of your own, if you get it fixed at one of their shops there's a "lifetime" warranty (that's the crap i heard)
-if totalled the adjuster will tell you what they think it's worth and ask you if it's ok with you...if it's ok they'll mail you paperwork via some certified carrier, you sign it and return it with the title, receive a check and that's it.

If it was her fault, call the insurance company. If it was someone else's fault, call a lawyer.

Well I think she just blacked out, and hit a fire hydrant. Not really another moving car. Not sure what would happen?

First, just relax. I had an accident once when I was 18 that totaled the car but I was OK (Thank GOD for Seat Belts!). Panicking didn't help, but seeking advice from someone with knowledge in this situation did. I say call the unsurance company ASAP and make a police report, if there isn't one already. The insurance company will help you no matter what. Also, if there is a police report ask them if they have any witnesses, and you can contact witnesses when you find them just to get a better idea about what happened. If the case is serious and a lot of monetary damages are involved (i.e. if she hit another car instead of an electic pole, or if there are others injured or if SHE was injured by another driver) you wanna get an attorney. Find an attorney that will act ASAP and not tell you "don't worry, I'll take care of everything next month." A delay will only prolong your anxiety and uncertainty, so go ask around and find out what you can yourself first.

I read your last post above mine now, and if she did indeed hit a hydrant you should still make a police report. They might want to investigate in case another driver's actions caused her to hit the hydrant. If the car is insured call the insurance company and find what kind of coverage you have for her--full or liabillity. They'll tell you what to do next. Of course keep in touch with the hospital and check on your mother's condition. The police and/or insurance company may want to know your mother's location so they can communicate with the hospital (they do this all the time) so provide them this (if they don't ask for it, ask them if they want it).

Just as a disclaimer, I'm NOT an attorney or experienced in these situations, just a lay citizen. I'm just telling you what I would do in such a situation here in Chicago.

what happened to her?

She hit the hydrant, at quite a good clip after seeing the car yesterday. The whole front end of the car body is crumpled and 'tucked' into the engine compartment. (THANK YOU Japanese safety engineering!). So the car is totaled. Though from the dashboard area to the trunk, the car looks like it was never in an accident?

Airbags went off, and really did all the damage to my mom. They go off at like 175mph in under a second I think. And this broke 4 ribs, and fractured her sternum. But I mean, she won't be crippled or anything. It will just hurt like a bitch for two months or so.

But I got the accident report and sent it over to the insurance company. She has the minimum insurance, which will only cover 20k in medical expenses and 8k in immediate medical expenses; all after her health insurance runs out. She's not really libel per se. She didn't hit anyone in car or otherwise.

Its just day to day now with her in ICU. The worst part (for us anyway) is she has an intubation tube down her throat, and can't really talk. But actually, her time in the hospital will be the 'easy' part. For when she gets home and recuperates will be the most difficult part.

Thanks for all your best wishes guys!

P.S. Anyone know of a resource for family members caring/coping with a loved ones recouperation?
