Mom has an ipod touch a1367 on ios 4.1

And she cant install anything new as her os is too old. I know this can go to ios 6.x but she never connected this to a computer. Is the only way for her to update the SW via itunes on a computer?

turn off auto-sync in iTunes. She can connect the device and backup in iTunes before replacing the OS.

If you make an appointment with the Genius Bar, you might even be able to take the device and a laptop in and they'd help you out.

She never used iTunes and the iPod was never connected to a computer. I haven't messed with an iPod in years but I always remember that the first connect would usually wipe the iPod. Is this still true?

Don't remember if it makes you wipe the iPod, but if it does, it will ask before doing so. Won't just reformat the iPod without approval

Probably. I also think it wont update unless you register and synch. I will test this with an old iphone on a new install of itunes and see what happens.

Hopefully the old iPhone is running iOS 4, that will have an effect on the test most likely.

It only wipes the media if auto-sync is enabled (the default setting), and you also accept the warning dialog that you're syncing the iTunes library to the device.

i thought every app works on every iOS, else this is called fragmentation right??

my 3g ipod touch never saw an update in its life and installed everything fine (although i havent installed a lot of games). if you update your ipod, you might regret it. no lie

Most apps pretty rapidly drop support for iOS versions after the 2 most recent since there's some API or something they want to use in the new versions. It's not as big of a deal on iOS because a much higher percentage of devices get the updates quickly.
