HOUSTON -- Prosecutors say a 14-year-old girl's mother and her grandmother have been charged with forcing the child to work as a prostitute.

Alicia Melchor, 33, and Elizabeth DeLeon Buford, 55, are behind bars in Harris County.

Both women, who were arrested in the 3300 block of Telephone Road, have extensive criminal histories.

Melchor, the girl's mother, has been arrested for crimes including public lewdness, burglary, drugs, and five prostitution charges.

The grandmother has gone by a number of aliases, but according to court documents is currently using Elizabeth DeLeon Buford.

She also has a criminal record including burglary, drugs and prostitution.

Buford faces the same charge as the mother, plus is charged with possession of a controlled substance, heroin.

Spokeswoman Donna Hawkins with the Harris County District Attorney's office says the teen told police that she was being forced into prostitution to help the women pay their living expenses.

The two women were arrested Tuesday after the girl led officers to a motel.

A lawyer with the organization Children at Risk says they could face up to 20 years behind bars.

Only 20 years? Pathetic excuses for parents should be sterilized for crap like this, in addition to whatever prison sentence a jury hands them.

Look at the related stories section, sadly it seems like just another occurrence... *sigh*... humanity should end in 2012.

"20 Years is a pretty stiff Sentence. What exactly are you expecting?"

please tell me you don't have children - and if you do, god help them

What would it matter? 20 Years is a stiff sentence regardless.

20 years is a life sentence for the Grandmother. She is probably in her 50s. Even with early out, she will be past 60.

You are confused EagleKeeper. You see, being a grandmother in the normal world usually means 50's or so. In the inner-city "ghetto" world, grandmothers are usually 35.

if you really think 20 years is a sufficient prison term for forcing your OWN DAUGHTER into prostitution when she's 13 or 14 - you shouldn't be allowed to have children, period

We often give people less than 20 years for KILLING people.

Exactly, if you want to be outraged about something be outraged that we let murders walk after a few years in jail.

And to these women they were just teaching the daughter the family business, they were probably brought up in the same way. Doesn't make it right, just sayin.

This is why I want the death penalty in Canada (I know it's not in Canada, but you'll find such cases here). There are times when I look at the actions of a person and say "I do not want you in my society, I do not want to forgive".

For a person, without mental illness, to knowingly and willingly commit such acts is beyond forgiveness.

She is 55 now, so she was 41 when she became a grandmother. Pretty young

41 is really not that young for becoming a grandmother. That means that the grandmother had the mother when she was 21 and the mother had a kid when she was 20. For your average high school educated person who marries their teenage sweetheart, it's not uncommon at all. Not everyone spends 8 years getting a 4 year degree and then waits until they're 35 to have kids.

Having lived in Houston, Telephone Rd is not "inner-city ghetto".
Not a wonderful area by any means but not Detroit either.

At the very least life in prison without possibility of parole. Forcing a 14 year old child into prostitution IS accepting money to have your own child raped (statutory legally but flat out rape can be argued as well).

Adult male rapes 14 year old girl and the minimum should be life without possibility of ever getting out.

Same thing with forcing your own child to be raped in exchange for money. Hell, the 2nd is much worse in my opinion. That poor kid has got to be seriously messed up.
