Heh, yeah I've seen some P4's fused to the heatsink. They were very dead. When you are trying to diagnose why a system won't boot it's kinda odd when you pull off the heatsink and the processor comes with it!

Not really, I've had some A64s come off with their heatsinks. The procs worked though. I guess the TIM was *very* good.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a new CPU instead of a whole new computer?

it's a northwood though... running at it's 2533mhz stock speed

Intels in general (Northwood or not), tend to run quite hot. Not sure what the setup was here, but a case needs to be properly cooled by Intel's standards. There's a reason why Intel has these cooling standards...because the CPU itself sucks at heat dissipation.

Anyways, I've seen these have temp problems (even northwoods), if there isn't a sidefan on the case, and the computer is shoved in somewhere (such as a cabinet).

I know I'm a biased bastard, but nonetheless, stated above are all facts. :)

Hahaha, like an AMD chip is better ;)

considering my A64 was running ~19-20 degrees watercooled (at stock speed), and ~28-30 degrees stock speed, and stock HS/F, I'd say so ;):p

You're going to argue AMDs run cooler? My OC'ed Northwood idles at 30C, in a SFF case, with one fan. I would be surprised to see an OC'ed AMD run this cool with this setup.

Is this going to turn into an argument?
If it does, give me a holler, I want to watch.

EDIT: Didn't see you said SFF...mine's not SFF, so I can't really test it out accurately

with the amd64, the air is cool even cold leaving me with cold legs in the winter, brrrrrr.

seriously, this sux. now i'm going to have to find room on my desk for my box.

ironically, i used to move my other boxes to the desk because they got too warm, now i'm moving my amd64 box to the desk because it doesn't run warm enough.

They are in KY and Unsure if the CPU took anything with it.

Getting a dell to get them through and they are visiting in a month so I will replace the CPU then.

They have two computers but one is an old 700 Celeron. so now mom and dad will have two good computers.

There was no side fan cooling requirement for that version of p4 (478?) Mine runs fine BUT they smoke and NEVER CLEAN THE CASE.

I recently bought a small 30 dollar air filter and it has done wonders on my dust issues.

I'm impressed your parents won't be content with just a 700celery.

wow that guy must have a really hot house ;) or his watercooling goes through some sort of freezer... that would be cool.

Im guessing the fan probably clogged with dust so it was basically worthless

i just had that happen the other night.
was doing my routine cleaning of my case and thought i would check the stock thermal grease and apply some ceramique if needed. well the chip came with the heatsink, but all the pins survived and the chip still works. *wipes brow*
