"Shannon Johnson, 34, admitted to police that she was on Facebook playing Cafe World, checking on a friend's status and sharing videos in the living room, while her son was in the bathtub. Johnson told police her son was playing in the bathtub for about 10 minutes and she checked on him once. Johnson said that about three more minutes went by and she didn't hear her son playing, so she went to check on the baby and saw him sideways with his face in the water, according to the arrest affidavit."

The affidavit also notes that when asked why she would allow a one year old to be in the bath alone, Johnson said that the child was a "very independent baby" and explained that she "didn't want him to be known as a mama's boy."

Seriously who leaves a one year old unattended? Especially around water?
 
While accurate, the thread title is misleading.

Had it not been facebook, she still would have been out of the room doing something.

I was allowed to be alone in the tub at a young age to play around before or after the bath. But there'd just be so little water in it that I couldn't drown if i tried.

Babies can drown in 1 inch of water. Not sure what "young" is to you but leaving a small child in/around water is bad parenting.
 
Well I guess she doesn't have to worry about raising a mama's boy anymore. I wonder if she updated her status after that?
 
That's beyond irresponsible. Even if there's no water, just falling in the tub could hurt a child badly, especially hitting your dead on the faucet or such. I was expecting a teenage mom but she looks to be in her 30s.

As a parent of a 21 month old, I cannot believe how stupid some parents are.

That said, I have repeatedly scolded my wife for walking out of the bathroomand leaving my son unattended in the bath tub. She is usually leaving to get a towel and is only gone for 15-30 seconds, but if I recall correctly from my lifeguard training (which is over 20 years old now), it only takes ~10 seconds for a baby to drown.

only checking on the child once in 10 minutes? a 1 yr old? wtf thats just insane.

Title is accurate. This is not an indictment on facebook. You are right she could have been easily IM'ing or texting friends. I think facebook was added to the article to show the shallowness of some people.. who would rather play games and check messages than worry about a baby in the tub.

You are correct but the title is not misleading. But it is good sensationalism and thats why in this day and age, it makes the news. Had it been coffee or tea or television the kid would be dead but that would not be an interesting story to the average American reader. We would never even know about it.

poor girl... there goes her paycheck to pay for the computer and internet.. now she will have to it all over again...

Not sure. I know I could walk b/c I remember walking around in the tub splashing water. My parents tell me I was walking at a really early age (like 8months or less). But I was bathed in the sink until I got too big for it. That said, child memories from before the age of like 3 or 4 are extremely rare and/or inaccurate, according to what I know about child psychology. So, *shrug* maybe I'm just imaginging.

thepd7, I have a hard time believing that a child aged 2-3 would drown in an inch of water though.

An adult can drown in an inch of water if they can't move. It takes very little water in the lungs to drown a person, and humans natural drowning reactions are backwards in a lot of ways.

Not believing it could be deadly. Real easy to drown in a few inches of water, just a lot easier with young kids. Water hits your vocal cords, you're done. Don't even have to get water in the lungs.
