I think if someone called me a monkey I'd laugh, since I'm cheeky and like to masturbate and throw my own fecal matter. But I don't think you'd find a black person in this country who wouldn't be offended by that.

the teacher didn't call the MOM and monkey, the teacher called the CHILD a monkee.

i don't think there are hardly ANY parents in america, no matter what the color or ethnic origin, that wouldn't be upset at comments like that towards their child.

What's the problem with taking a photo of your family and putting it on your folder in the first place? 😕

I think this teacher was very naieve to think that nobody would construe such comments as anything but racist. Not to mention the fact she shouldn't have made such an insensitive comment to begin with. I hope she gets her just rewards. There is no place for this b.s. anymore.

Did anyone read the article?

The mother is not asking for the teacher to be fired, she's asking for her to be temporarily removed while she takes sensitivity training. That is a totally reasonable and level-headed request.

negatory, the comment was directed to her family, and not her persoanlly.

whatever.

has nothing at all to do with my point, that either way, there are very few parents regardless of color that WOULDN'T have been upset at having a remark like that directed at their child.

Personally for me, this thread is interesting because i want to gauge where people draw the line between Inappropriate comment to PC gone overboard.

Me, if a comment like this is directed at a child and seems malicious (intentional or not) then i think the comment is inappropriate.

I would think that the majority of atheist ATOTers would NOT see a problem with this comment, as they believe we technically decended or are relatives of apes. Right? Then again, maybe I'm way off.

Me = atheist ATOTer = 😕

Personally, I think the teacher was trying to make a cute joke and uttered the question BEFORE she realized the racial connotations (which were not intended). It was an airhead moment, not a racist situation. But then she made it much worse by asking a student to keep a secret. THAT's what was troubling the girl, if you ask me.

Maetryx, i agree with you, it was probably an attempt at a bad joke, but EVEN bad jokes can still have the impact of a racist remark. especially when made to a 4th grader. mb it's because i'm a parent, but i believe that you should still shelter kids SOME.

again, really what i wanted to see in this thread was kind of a poll on WHERE people drew the line between insensitive joke and crude remark.

in my opinion, this particular remark by this teacher IF made the way it was reported went beyond just being an insensitive joke.

How the hell is that racial in the slightest?

Because there is a long and ugly history of black people being called gorillas or monkeys, meaning they are less than human. It's well-documented and I don't blame the family for being upset.

EXACTLY. That was totally a racist comment. I can't believe people are defending the teacher. What a stupid thing for a teacher to say.
