Mojito Appreciation Thread

Up until Die Another Day, I had never heard of a Mojito. After seeing it, I decided to try one for myself.

They are GREAT, this could easily be my new favorite summer drink (behind a nice summer beer like Sam Adams Summer Ale). If it was easier to make, it'd be a shoe in. You can't beat the simplicity of margaritas though 🙂

Here's my recipe:

Simple syrup, I adjust this according to glass size. Generally, I use about 2 parts sugar to 3 parts water, mix well, add a little more water, then stir again.

Then I toss in one sprig of mint. I crush it on the sides with a spoon slightly and leave it in the glass.

Next, juice of about 1/4 of a lime. Add your favorite light rum, 1-4 shots.

Top with club soda. Now, I couldn't find club soda ANYWHERE here, so I used Sprite instead. Works just as well.

My girlfriend likes them too, but that's to be expected with a mixed drink. It's not too sweet, so I enjoy it more than most mixed drinks. The best part is they give you minty fresh breath 🙂

I like the Brazilian cousin of the mojito - Capirinha

Oh, also most mojitos are made by crushing mint leaves in a pestle beforehand.

This I know. The problem is, while I have a mortor and pestle, the last thing it was used in was a chemistry lab. It's not getting anywhere near my food. I'll pick up a good one for the kitchen just as soon as I find a store that carries them offline.

Doesn't Castro drink Mojitos?

Man, those things are good. Best made with Cap'n Morgan. YUM!
Yeah, they're more or less the "National Drink of Cuba".
