Tried to install it and it brought up the Registration Wizard and README. After doing so, it closed all the windows, but the InstallShield button was still on the Task Bar. Right-clicking it only offered the Move option, so I killed it from the Task Manager and tried to play it.

It launches and then dies on a all-grey screen. Alt+F4 gets me back to the desk and this is the error:

Tried to read from a zip file gfx/2d/backtile.tga that was not open

If I try to Uninstall (either thru the Add/Remove or the Program's menu item) it just goes ZIP and says it's completed the command. Reinstalling does the same thing. I've locked up twice and now IE crashes the moment I try to launch it. I can't Windows Update (no IE) or anything.

WTF happened and how do I ditch this f*cking POS program. Gawddamn EA!!!

Yeah, that's pretty fubared up ;)

I would assume that, by closing the Install Shield prematurely, it corrupted a file that it was in the middle of moving, creating, or changing. This could have been a system file and that, my friend, is very bad karma...and stuff.

I can give you two suggestions.

1. Delete the MoH:AA directory from the C: drive (you may have already done this)
2. Using a registry cleaning program (can't suggest one as I don't normally use them), clean up your registry. It MAY (read: not likely, but the possibilty exists) take out the registry entries for MoH:AA, which will allow you to do a complete and "real" installation (not just a ZOOM-BAM-BOOM-DONE!).

Hope this helps. Good luck.
Death to EA!!!

Er, not really, b/c then I wouldn't have NHL2002 or Madden or... well *smack* Ow...

Well, System Restore salvaged my rig (backed up to yesterday), but I've tried to reinstall it and it STILL DOESN"T WORK!!!

The InstallShield closed OK, but it didn't create an icon on the Desktop, like I asked. When I went thru the Start>Programs method, it promptly gives this error:

F:\MOHAA\MOHAA.exe
Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed.

WTF is THAT about?!?! Also, their is now a generic program icon for it, but not the star icon that was there before.

REALLY hating EA about now...

My cable was down for a moment (Comcast changeover) when I tried the FOURTH time to get it to run, so I can't share the neato error about being unable to load Verdana, but after un/reinstalling it a FIFTH time, I'm back to the same error as in the first post!!! DAMMIT!!!!:|:|:|

I even installed it into the default path (C:\Program Files\EA....blah-yadda-whatever...) and it's still f*cked up.

WTF is wrong with this POS?!??!

Sounds like you have a bad cd, try exchanging it at the place you bought it. I read the alliedassault.net forums and haven't seen this problem before. Have you had this problem with other games? Maybe the cd protection isn't well readable on your system, that's why its not installing probably. Or, maybe you have a hardware problem with ram or your disk. I'd say exchange the title with another and try again -- usually stores will allow an exchange for the same title.

Haven't had any probs running or installing anything else. I even tried installing it with Disk #1 in the DVD drive and Disc #2 in the CD-RW. I'd take it back, but I got the last one in stock, but that may be the case cuz I had a bad Unreal disc waaaaaaaaaay back in 1998. (Has it been that long?!?)

Try installing from JUST the CD-RW drive. They can usually read CDs with strange protection better than DVD drives or normal CD drives for some reason.

I had a CD which I thought was bad, so I tried it in my CD-RW drive and it worked fine. (For the dense ones, the DVD drive which I used was NOT bad, just couldn't read the CD).

Seems like copy protection these days are tricking the legal buyers moreso than the pirates. Irony...:p

Safedisk BS!
Agree with TheGrandHooHa try reading with the burner. If it still fails exchange. You have a buddy that could try an install on a different puter?

:|:|:|:|THIS IS ABSOLUTE, TOTAL BULLF*CKINGSH*T!!!!:|:|:|:|

Comcast is running like crap tonight (on dial-up now) , so I didn't see the above post until know, but I already tried to install thru the CD-RW and it's more f*cked up than ever! Get this: It first refused to uninstall or reinstall, but it f*cked things up again, forcing me to do THREE seperate System Restores and things are still goofy.

Not only did it never uninstall completely, when I tried to reinstall, it INSTALLED INTO THE WINDOWS FOLDER AND PUT SOME, BUT NOT ALL ICONS IN THE PROGRAMS MENU!!! NOT in a folder, but where the M$ Office stuff is listed! Unbef*ckalievable!!! Uninstall removed those entries, but gawd knows if it'll be possible to install again. (Like I want to now!)

This has been an unmitigated disaster!:|:( Beware of buying this evil, PC-destroying POS!

FWIW it installed fine on my XP Pro system (Epox 8k7a, 1.2 Athlon, GF3)

When you are installing it, you are logged in with adminstrator rights correct? This is required for installing and running the game.

Although unlikely to be the cause, when I was running an overclocked system I always reset the system to default speeds/voltages before installing any software/hardware. Only after everything was working okay did I turn it back up. You might try that.

man that sucks, I the same problem with my rig, a few months ago, the thing is I could install practically no games. Anyway I checked that my system was runnin a 250watt PSU, what PSu do you have? If your rig is underpowered then for some reason CD's will not install. And to confirm this, I bought a 300watt and my rig works fine, went back to 250 same problems. However can you install any other games, programs?? Try replacing the PSU
Hope it works out for ya .

Btw I check your rig you have a 350watt pSU with 4 additional harddrives YOU NEED MORE POWERR CAPTAIN jeez

I had a 300W PS in there with the same setup when I was Intel based, but upped it to 350W when I went to Athlon. It's installing the game, but for some reason won't UNinstall it, or refuses to run. I got the "recursive error: Unable to load Verdana" message again last night, but Comcast was running at .1 Kbs, so I didn't post it.

After the "installing to C:\Windows\main...." crap, I'm terrified to try it again. It obviously is f*cked up and unstable. Count yourselves lucky, you who didn't get torched by EA.

hmm, dude the only advice I can give you is either do a clean install, use Regedit from Lavasoft, its better than the OS regedit or try another PSU. Maybe yours is defective you never know. One time I was playing RTCW and I started smelling burning plastic, I freaked cuz I thought I fried my Vid card or MOBO. I opened up the case and found a dead moth in my PSU. That was my 2 nd PSU cuz the first one was defective after 3 weeks, I was not able to load anything. At first I thought I shorted the MOBO somewhere, then I thought my drives were messed up. IT turns out the PSU I was using was like a 250-300 I cant remeber. If you are overlocking your rig and it seems so with all that stuff, get a friggin 430 psu. Enermax I hear makes real good one. If I am wrong I will give you my "girlfriend" Olga she a russian weightlifter :D

I can't do anything with this. It thinks it's installed or it's not - it's total sh*t!!

I checked Lavasoft.com, but didn't see any Regedit stuff. Got a link and a hint as to what I should edit out?

Just sent a scathing tech support note to EA. Even after cleaning the keys I could find, it's still acting up. The worst software ever. Makes me want to install AOL 6.0 to have a vacation.

Here's my response to the inane response I got from EA Tech Support (note -I mentioned repeatedly AND the web page had a field to indicate I have WinXP):

Chris H.,

I know that many of the tech support letters you handle come from people who are barely able to to play Pokemon without dismembering themselves, but it's hard for you to offer useful support when you clearly DIDN'T READ MY INITIAL LETTER!!! Here we go...

>Ok, un-install the game and then perform these steps.

This is why I wrote! It CAN'T and WON'T uninstall!!!! I've manually deleted the folders and tried to hack the Registry and no matter what I do know, it will not install and for some reason thinks it is now!

>First, open your Control Panel (Start > Run > Control Panel) and find the Multimedia icon. Double click this icon and look for the Audio tab.

For starters, the CORRECT path is Start>SETTINGS>Control Panel! How the heck is a computer novice helped by this basic error?!? Next, as I said repeatedly, I'M RUNNING WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL! The path is Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices for WinXP.

>On the Audio tab, there should be a box labeled "Preferred playback device.".....blah-blah-blah...

Already set.

>Next, try lowering your audio hardware acceleration....close DxDiag and try running the game again.

THE GAME IS NOT INSTALLED BECAUSE I CAN'T INSTALL IT BECAUSE IT THINKS IT'S INSTALLED ALREADY!!!!!

>Make sure that you have closed any programs or tasks running in the background as sometimes one of the programs can conflict with the game. Background applications such as anti-virus programs are often the cause of conflicts.

I've tried disabling AV with no benefit. This is the typical excuse/crutch of tech support and maybe EA should ask all the other companies whose products don't require killing everything else.

>To do this, hold the Ctrl and Alt keys down at the same time and hit the Del key once. This will in turn bring up a window called "close programs".

Yeah, if I was running Win9x/Me, but I'm running WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL (Am I making this clear yet?) and Ctrl-Alt-Del gets you the Task Manager.

>The only two applications that you want listed here before installing the game are "explorer" and "systray". Close all other programs by double-clicking on them. You will need to repeat this process after closing each application. Note that some applications may take multiple times before closing. Don't worry that you are permanently changing your system configuration; these applications will return when you restart your system.

Thanks for the reassurance in the end. Maybe I'll try that when I go back to Win98, but for now, I'm running WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL!!! None of what you copied and pasted from the boilerplate tech documents you've got there applies to WinXP!

>Check the game directory under the \Main\ subfolder to ensure that all 6 PAK files (7 if patched) are installed. A proper install will have Pak0.pk3, Pak1.pk3, Pak2.pk3, Pak3.pk3, Pak4.pk3, and Pak5.pk3.

THE GAME ISN'T INSTALLED BECAUSE I CAN'T GET THE FRIGGIN' THING TO WORK!!! When it was installed, all the files were there and I was able to unzip and view the TGA file listed in the first error dump included in my e-mail.

>If any of these files are missing a thorough uninstall and reinstall should be performed. Uninstall the game, delete its folder. After this run a Defrag on hard drive and reinstall the game.

All together now...I CAN'T INSTALL OR UNINSTALL!

>If none of these suggestions help,

They haven't.

>...please allow me to get a closer look at your system configuration....save a file called dxdiag.txt...and please send this file as an attachment to your next email.

Done.

>Hopefully these suggestions will help resolve your difficulty playing the game.

I'm afraid that I may have to reformat and reload my hard drive. I had my Mother's user profile corrupt this morning and temporarily lost all her data before I was able to salvage some of it.

It's a good thing my day job is working as a computer support tech (I'm not kidding.), so I was able to work around your best efforts. I'd appreciate it if we could skip the AOL-level user support and could proceed to something USEFUL, like the list of Registry keys that are faking out the Autorun.exe into thinking the game is installed. My system was running OK until Monday night, when I made the tragic error of purchasing this game and popping it into my unsuspecting computer. In a few short minutes, it managed to torch a month-old OS install. Nice job.

My last EA Games purchase was Black & White and that charmingly-coded hunk of plastic refused to run on one computer with an new Acer CD-ROM drive and would not install on my main rig with a Pioneer DVD drive. Only when I installed from the CD-RW drive would it work, due to the copy-protection methods. I PAID for a game I can't play on 2 out of 3 optical drives and am currently trying to salvage my main PC (which I use for business as well) from the ravages of more EA incompetance. I'm surprised there hasn't been a class-action lawsuit against EA yet.

>Thank you for contacting EA Technical Support.

>Chris H.
>EA Technical Support

Stay tuned, sports fans.

If you cleared out the registry, look in your Program Files folder for a hidden folder called InstallShield Installation Information. There might be several subfolders in it with a file named Setup.ini. Check those out for any reference to MOH:AA. If you find one delete that whole subfolder and try installing it again.

DefRef, you are one funny mofo! I wish I could help you but it sounds like you know a heck of a lot more about pc's than I do:eek:
Anyway, every tragedy has a silver lining (?) and I just wanted to tell you that I love reading your posts in this thread! Every day I look forward to reading your description of the previous nights setback.
Hopefully your MOHAA problem will be recitified soon without having to perform some kind of voodoo ceremony on your computer but until then, keep 'em coming!:D
