Modular Power Supply Question

Hi, I wanted to know what a modular power supply is. As far as I can tell, the wires can be removed from the psu to clean all the wire mess. I just got a OCZ GameXStream 600W and I was wondering if that has a modular design because there's a lot of wires that I don't really need. Also, I'm still waiting for the rest of my parts to arrive, is there a way I can check whether the psu is working properly. I hooked it up to a Yate Loon fan and hit the switch, but nothing happened. Im kinda worried because i bought it off someone in the forums and don't want a DOA unit. Please help.

A modular power supply has cables that attach to the supply with external connectors, rather than having the cables directly soldered to a circuit board inside the supply. Some or all of the cables can be removed easily to reduce clutter. Here is an especially colorful example of a modular supply.

The GameXStream 600 W is not modular.

In order to test a PC power supply you either need to connect it to a motherboard (recommended) or use a paper clip to short the green wire on the power supply's main connector to one of its black (ground) wires.

Your experience does not indicate any problem with the supply itself.

Thank you for addressing all my questions/concerns. I hooked it up to the motherboard on my old computer and it was powering on fine. Once again, thank you for your help.
