A computer I set up for a friend is having sound problems. The card is an AWE 64 ISA card on a tyan trinity 400 mobo. The problem he is having is that it does not play sounds in windows & in select games. It plays audio CD's OK, & motocross madness 2 has sounds; but normal windows sounds, Unreal Tournament, AOE 2, and other games suddenly have no sounds.

I had him check to make sure the 'mute' is not on,had him check the volume controls, had him check device manager & it says there is no problem with the soundcard. I had him remove the card, boot into windows, shut down & put the card back in -- still not working right. He is using the drivers in Windows 98 for the card (its worked fine for months) since we have no driver disk for it.

Anyone else have any ideas? I'm stumped.

Has any hardware been added recently?? It sounds like an IRQ conflict, did you try removing the sound card from device manager in the safe mode and then letting the system re-detect the sound card? This might clear up the problem.:)

He's going to bring the computer over to my place on saturday & I'll have a look at it then. Also going to install a new video card.

edit: got it fixed, had to reinstall the drivers.
