These mods improve a lot of things. For co-op you & your buddy will need the same ones. You can easily undo these mods too.
Use something like notepad to keep notes on the mods you're doing. I do this for every game I Mod so I remember what the hell I did and how to undo it.
So um uh....... Before we get into this make a backup of your latest saved game. Should be at: Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\14771558\55230\remote or similar path. Files will be .sr3. Just throw everything in the folder to another one named something like save backup. Unless you start a new game.

2. Snag Gentlemen of Steelport: http://idolninja.com/sr2.php (you'll need this for later mods too.)
Just throw it in your Saints Row The Third folder. Under Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third
Open the folder now cut and paste "Remove_all_SRTT_mods_(MOVE_ME_TO_SRTT_INSTALL_FOLDER)" to the Saints Row The Third folder again Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third. This will clean up other mods you install. Good to have. You do not need to run it now unless you have installed any previous mods.
Now Go back to Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third\Gentlemen_of_Steelport_v1.0_Beta_3 and make a folder in it called "packfile cache backup".
You will then goto Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third\packfiles\pc\cache and cut and paste to the backup (packfile cache backup) folder these two files: "patch_compressed.vpp_pc" and "patch_uncompressed.vpp_pc" so you can undo this mod if you need too by copying and pasting these two files back in the cache folder.
Now we're ready to add some extra mods to further enhance the game and in some ways bring back some of the features that were in SR2.
3. Now get "Shitface Showcase" Mod Compilation. Adds tons of neat new features: http://www.saintsrowmods.com/forum/threads/shitface-showcase-mod-compilation.2215/
Open the Default_Mods folder and select everything in that folder and extract it in the Saints Row The Third folder (Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third) and select Yes To All to replace any files it asks.
4. Revamped Car Physics: http://www.saintsrowmods.com/forum/threads/revamped-car-physics.2678/ Making rampaging in a car freaking fantastic.

With Gentlemen of Steelport, you need to take a couple extra steps first to avoid mission replay crashing:
Open up your Gentlemen of Steelport folder, extract stream_grid.asm_pc in the zip file to 'optional_mod_stuff/sr3_city_0.vpp_pc' and overwrite. Then extract sr3_city_awld.str2_pc in zip file to 'optional_mod_stuff/1-MY_EXTRA_MODS'
Now double click on Create_Custom_GoS_v1
then press C and press enter. (You will need to do this each time you plan to do further modding.)
Or press A if you want to toggle additional mods just make sure your co-op buddy also does this and that you don't use any that will cause a conflict with any of the other mods which they will say in the link you goto download them or in there ReadMe file if any mods from GoS should not be toggled.
Once done open the folder: MY_CUSTOM_SR3_MODS copy and paste "patch_compressed.vpp_pc" and "patch_uncompressed.vpp_pc" and throw it in: Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\saints row the third\packfiles\pc\cache
Now load up the game and enjoy!
Some further notes:
- If using a saved character. You'll have to run or drive to the surgeon and set your Taunt and Complement. It will default you to some Dance(Complement) and Throwing up(Taunt).
- "Shitface Showcase" Mod Compilation also comes with "Incorporates Lord_Freezer's Vampire DLC fix which changes the neck bite skill to a buyable upgrade instead of giving it to you right away."

The developer of Gentlemen Of Steelport Compilation or GoS is working on a GUI update that will include more of Shitfaces stuff built in. Just no real ETA on when it's done.

All these mods were made before the SDK was released. No mods with the SDK tools have been made yet. So expect some real epic mods to come out. Also explains why GoS GUI edition has been delayed.
