Please do not try to convince me to get a kyro II. i have seen them in person, and they do not have the features that i am looking for. if you want to talk about kyro II vs everything else, then please find another thread or make one for yourself. i am looking at getting a radeon 64 MB VIVO card when i build a new computer in the next couple months, but i want to use Win2k exclusively. i read anand's win2k driver report from february, and i have searched the forum, but i can't find any real reports on the radeon's performance in games with Win2k service pack 2 and the latest drivers. could anyone tell me where to get a good report on current radeon win2k performance in a wide variety of games (d3d games, especially somewhat older ones seem to have the most problems)?

thanks a lot!

LOL

man a simple registry tweak (a new string) will provide lower drops with smoke with kyro... (i.e. with playable results)

if you are expecting to see no drops with smoke with radeon... you will get a big surprise...
😉

I don't have counter strike (yap... LOL) but kyro will suffer less from the CS smoke with an high end cpu (I don't know why, but that is a fact)

that game was conceived with some programming tricks (work fine only with voodoo cards) ...
if you want great Counter strike performance (with smoke) you can only go with voodoo...

glide glide glide

PowerVR Half Life doesn't use glide. It uses either D3D or Open GL.

half life???
I have excellent results with half life with kyro

so it is true...
there must be some programing trick with CS...
geforce, radeon and kyro have big drops with smoke unlike voodoo's with CS.
(THAT IS WHAT I AM FINDING FROM READING ALL THE FORUMS)
it is not glide (I didn't know) but that is the true...

Powervr2 you got to understand their are people who still play half life. It's still fun to play. And getting below 20 fps is no good for a product that was made in 2001 for 1998 game.

I'm gonna be needing a new card because I want to start fragging since I gots me DSL now. Can I buy the kyro 2 from a retail store? I don't play half life anymore cause the control sucks in that game.

LMK I'm about to hit the store.

Oh yeah to the post.

Win2k suck for me with my radeon LE. It gives me little texture errors in games like nascar. Unreal Tournament started to crash with the latest drivers.

It might be my setup but performance wise it's roughly 20% slower.

It seems to me that Kyro 2 has better win2k drivers than win98.

They actully get better results in win2k in some situations and equal to most.

if you are talking about half life then there is no problem with kyro..
I have smooth play with 1024x768x16 with 2xFSAA (yes 2XFSAA)

CS play fine with kyro but there are drops when there smoke but these drops are similar to those offered by radeon or geforce 2 ...

I bought my kyro 2 at retail (here in Portugal)

I found a new kyro review (this time with no benchmarking) 😉

Fired up Counter-Strike and after configuring for OpenGL (default driver) I popped onto a server. I have always run Counter-Strike at 1024x768 with cl_showfps set to "1". I was getting 60-99FPS on my Voodoo and the 4500 game me the same results but the colors looked better. The textures seemed to have a more realistic look and the lighting was slightly more effective. The textures almost seem to have a pseudo bump-map quality. I was very impressed with the image quality.

after he reinstalled windows here is what he got with kyro

Tribes 2
Fired up the game, found a server, and jumped in. WOW! Great FPS and the game is so beautiful! Here are some shots of what it looks like now. Please note the FPS indicator in the upper-left-hand corner of each shot. You may click on the images to see the 1024x768 version.

i was really hoping to get my question answered and avoid having my thread killed with kyro II arguments. is there any way to prevent certain members from joining the discussion? powervr2 just so you know, a friend of mine bought a kyro II (the inno3d 64 MB card) and even with the registry hack, he got an average of 7 fps in counter-strike in smokey areas on a 1.2 gHz athlon. when he got a radeon, his frames stayed at about 50 in that same situation. as far as this thread is concerned, case closed. hey EMAN, thanks for addressing my question, but do you by chance know some exact figures for the 64 MB VIVO card?

thanks,
--jacob

Radeon vivo uses same drivers as Radeon LE. It's not going to make a difference if it's radeon le or vivo.

They only thing the 64meg card does a little better than the 32meg card is higher resolutions and no stutters in Unreal Tournament.

Other than that it's the same situation.

I use 3205 drivers and it seems to be more stable than the latest driver.

I hate dual booting so I'm about to go for kyro 2 because it does very good in Unreal Tournament engine and Quake 3 engine games.

Half life was based on quake 2 engine. Why are cards still having problems on a 3 year old game?

HAHAHA! eat taht powervr2... about time someone lays a smackdown on your kyro2 buttloving 😀

EdipisReks, i havnt tried my radeon in win2k, but the best place for radeon driver discussions would be the rage3d forums.

I use my AIW in Win2k SP2 only, I use the latest drivers and play a variety of games(not so much this time of year). Which games do you play?

i play quake, cs, ut, several space flight sims (tachyon, x-wing alliance, etc), diablo II, baldurs gate, crimson skies, roller coaster tychoon 😀, on and on and on. i play quite a variety of games, and i am hoping that there will be some room in the performance for newer games, as i wouldn't get a new card until next spring at the earliest. i know that the performance of the Radeon is not going to be as good as a geforce2 in win2k at this time, but i really want the radeon's vivo features and its great image quality. as long as i'm not going to get a huge drop, i' be happy.

OK, I just installed the new Q3A patch 1.29 something, and if I could figure out how to run the timedemo's, I would give you some numbers, First impressions are "yea baby" but I've only played for a little while, didn't have time to check the new weapon effects yet. I use OpenGl in Q3A and UT (with hi rez textures). I guess I probably play Serious Sam more than other FPS games right now, and I tend to go more for the higher quality graphics than Raw speed and have no complaints with gameplay.

The kids play Black and White and Diablo 2 quite a bit, and Hitman codename 47 (that game is a kick!) and Midtown Madness.

Of all the games I play, Nascar4 and Offroad will hiccup on occasion in crowded conditions, but not enough for me turn the grapics/resolution down.

I generally run my games 1280x960x32bit highest quality if I can, and have only tried Q3A with the latest drivers, but I have no complaints with any of my games so far.

rbV5, have you tried FSAA? i'm really hoping to be able to play games (the space sims, tribes 2, etc) at about 800x600x32 with 2x. thanks a lot for your input!

I can't tell you about games in win2k with Radeon, I play them in win98. But just a suggestion, how about dual boot 98 and 2k. I doubt the drop will reach the unbearable level.

This might be interesting to you if you haven't seen it yet Link. Anandtech review, although done in February, you might can deduce something from it. It look like no drop at all with quake3 engine on 1042X768 32bits; big drops on Unreal to 45fps but it is more than a playable level; not working with serious sam; and little drop on MDK2. I think is OK.

This is done at Feb.

i saw that review, but i was hoping that there would be a more up to date one some where. with all the discussion about Radeon's with win2k on several forums, you would think that there would be a review. i am thinking of doing dual boot, if necessary, with win 98 having only the games that don't run well in win2k, and nothing else. i can get a pair of 4.5 GB ultra scsi 2 10,000 rpm drives for pretty cheap, and i was thinking of installing win 98se on one and win2k on the other, and then have a 60 GB or so 7200 IDE drive partitioned into 2 equal parts (one for win98 and one for win2k)for all my software. that should give decent performance 😀:Q😀

<< rbV5, have you tried FSAA? >>

No, I haven't actually. I do have Tribes2 however(I'm no big fan of multiplayer Net play, them cheatin' kids frag my a$$ way too quick online, so I haven't really gotten into CS or Tribes2, perhaps when I get my Lan set up at home, my teenage boys look like good victims to me)

Is there a benchmark for Tribes2 I can run? I'll give it(FSAA) a shot in some of my other games, but I really haven't heard anyone without a V5 or G3 rave about their FSAA, so I'm guessing there is a reason.

Edit: That review was old when it came out, Serious Sam for one runs great on my rig.

if you could play some games with FSAA i'd really appreciate it. FSAA on the radeon is not as good as on the Geforce3 and V5 from what i've heard, but it should be nice enough, especially on flight sims, etc. yeah, cheaters online suck pretty bad. i wonder if there will be something like Punkbuster for tribes2.....

thanks!

np, I'm curious as well. I'm at work this week(12x7 graveyard) so it'll be hit and miss, I'll report back into this thread🙂
