Moding a macbook

I was wondering, since macbooks use intel processors, can you buy your own memory and hard drives and put them in the macbook so you dont have to buy the expensive ones from apple?

why not? do you even know what you're talking about or is your ass on overload today?

BTW OP, I don't know about MacBooks, but ibooks and powerbooks use standard laptop hdd's. I think the macbooks use sata hdd's.

Rams gotta be standard too.

So the answer to your question.....most likely yes.

Also, doing those upgrades yourself will likely void any Apple Care warranty coverage you have.

So therefore, no.

i believe that you can upgrade the RAM and HD yourself for the macbook (its harder for the macbook pro), but check applenova.com/forums for exact details.

You can upgrade the RAM, Hard Drive, and Optical Drive.

You CANNOT upgrade the CPU in either one, as they are soldered to the motherboard.

Actually, that's a common misconception. Applecare doesn't care about upgrades you did yourself. In fact, they used to promote it. You'll almost NEVER find a stock Mac from pre-G4.

Even if you have to completely rip your system apart to do so?

I just did a Wallstreet upgrade, RAM, HD & CD. It took me all of 20 minutes, even with keyboard removal.

You can do this and people did it back in the PPC days, too. Depending on the model, replacing the hard drive can lie anywhere between dead easy and weekend project on the difficulty scale. 😉 I don't know how difficult it is for the present MacBook (and -Pro) line.

Replacing RAM is easy. But you should always put RAM of equal sizes in the MacBook's slots because of the integrated GMA 950 graphics.

Like the others said before, you can't order some kind of laptop bare bone at Apple.

Are you implying that they made barebones systems prior to the G4 line of notebooks?

When the hell was barebones ever mentioned? And when the hell did I mention notebooks?

We're talking about taking a laptop, and then upgrading it. None of that barebook crap.

I don't know for sure on the pricing, but it stands to reason and historical test that you can buy a bottom rung Apple, and then upgrade it for less of the cost than just buying it pre-equipped.

There are not bare-bones models, but you can upgrade the memory and hdd without voiding the warranty.

You're becoming quite annoying. When did anyone mention barebones? You do realize that Apple offers upgrades, right? Some people don't like to pay inflated prices for them.
