Moding a 9800SE

Hi. I recently received a radeon 9800SE after I cracked the ****** with my 9200SE not working properly. I have just read an article that said I could soft mod my card and turn it into a 9800Pro. The article said that I should replace my heat sink on the card. My problem is that this would then void my warranty and I'm not very good at being delicate. My case has good airflow will this really be necessary to do? Could I get away with not changing the heat sink over? Another question is that if the moding doesn?t work is it a simple matter of reinstalling the older driver and it will go back to normal?
