Modern Shakespeare

So, recently, with studying Shakespeare in school, we have been watching a lot of the modern-setting shakespear movies, like Romeo and Juliet with Leo, and Hamlet with Bill Murrey (he played Polonious) I dont think these two were the same director, but I love the filming in R&J, and love the way they layed out the story in Hamlet. Are there any other movies you would reccomend that are like this that you think I might enjoy?

Edit: The Hamlet we saw was with Ethan Hawke as Hamlet, and I really like the way it was filmed

Well, I liked it because I like Shakespeare. He has a style that is both beautiful and revolting at the same time. These are ok adaptations of some of his work. But to really appreciate anything you must take the time to read.

right, Like, Kenneth Branagh did some good movies based on Shakespearian plays, but they are kinda older, and dont have that modern feel like the Baz Luthrmann movies have

There was King of Texas which gets shown on TNT/TBS every now and then and is King Lear in a "western" setting. Has Patrick Stewart as Lear. Not great, but not as bad as it sounds either. Stewart is quite good.

EDIT: There were quite a few movies based on Shakespeare's work, but many are not transplanted to a different time and remain period pieces, i.e. Midsummer's Night Dream, Much Ado About Nothing and Henry V.

alright, Ill check that out

Also, 10 Things I Hate About You, is a teenage/high school Taming of the Shrew. Also has a few recognizable faces and is mildly entertaining.

EDIT: While not quite a different time period, Kurosawa's classic Ran is King Lear set in feudal Japan.
