Modern game like Panzer General?

I'm building a new PC this week to handle modern games. I used to be into PC gaming but haven't played much of anything in 5 years or so now, and frankly I wasn't too up to date before that. The only games I've played other than Plants and Zombies have been PS3 games.

One game I remember I really liked was Panzer General. Age of Empires was also pretty good. Are there more recent games that are along those line I would like? I tend not to like fantasy or magic. Portal 2 was good, but I think that's more science fiction than magic.

check out warhammer: armageddon.

everyone who reviewed the game said it's a lot like panzer general, but set in the warhammer40k universe (which may or may not be up your alley)

Battle Worlds: Kronos

Battle World: Kronos is a classic turn-based strategy game in the tradition of Battle Isle, Advance Wars and Panzer General. Have you ever wondered what games like that would look like today? Well, we did. As a result, we decided to develope Battle Worlds: Kronos.

A few things:

If you were into Panzer General for its depth and realism, then most RTS games aren't going to fill that void.

Without a doubt, if you're looking for something with that historical depth and attention to detail with regards to units and their abilities, the Combat Mission series is simply unmatched in that department. The series has been around since the late '90s, but has been restarted in the last few years and modernized. It's certainly not "jaw dropping good looking" but the visuals are solid, it allows you to play either in turn-based or full real-time, and actually requires real-world, historical battlefield tactics, nothing else really comes close.

Games like Company of Heroes can be fun and throw in a few nods to historical tactics, but overall are very "gamey" in their approach and play like basic RTS games.

As far as Age of Empires goes, have you tried the Total War series? Significantly more in-depth, especially when it comes to the battles (it's claim to fame), but still quite easy to get into and the best entries (Shogun 2, Medieval 2, Napoleon) can eat up hours and hours of your time.

Its a shame they dont come up with an updated version of PG. Of course I'd like to see a lot of the older games make a come back. Not likely to happen though.

Panzer Corps looks like a no-brainer so I'll pick that up.

Will pass on Battle Worlds and Warhammer just because it's futuristic/fantasy.

But guess what? In a little bit of serendipity, I just recently posted this:

So out of that short little list of 25 games, guess what's in there?

I'm getting Company of Heroes 2, Total War Shogun 2, and Supreme Commander Gold. Free.

Yeah, Supreme Commander is futuristic/spacy, but I'll give it a shot for free.

Have a look at Men of War for small-unit WWII tactics. For something cold war/modern, try the Wargame series, European Escalation, Airland Battle, and Red Dragon.

Wow, it's like Panzer Corps is Panzer General.

yes it is.

if you didnt know any better you'd think its panzer general. it is that similar.

i guess the developer thought 'if it aint broke... why fix it?'

now if someone did the same for master of orion 2
