Falcon 4.0 seemed really cool, but when I noticed the 700 page manual I decided against it.

Might try out x-planes. Yea seems like this genre is pretty dead. Looks like there's a new game coming out from Eagle Dynamics called Black Shark, heli sim of the Kamov Ka-50, its due out in December.

Yeah, but it's kickass when you get into it. I wouldn't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if I could fly an F-16 with little trouble.

DCS: Black Shark is in the making. Storm of War: Battle of Britain is an upcomming WW2 one from the same designer as IL-2 series.

IMO Lock On: Modern Air Combat is still the leader in modern military flight sims. There's a handful of planes you can fly and you can adjust the difficultly level to suit your skills. Graphics are still great for a game this old. There's also Falcon 4 but you're limited to flying just the F-16. Graphics are ok but no where close to LOMAC. Where F4 excels is that it has a dynamic campaign, meaning the outcome of your missions will affect later missions. Some older titles include FA18 Operation Desert Storm, Jane's FA18 and F15 that are still enjoyable.

If you just want to fly and check out the scenery then x-plane or fsx would be fine. If you find this boring then a military combat flight sim would probably suit you better.

The IL-2 Sturmovik series is the best IMO. Dogfighting in WWII planes is just more fun than modern jets.

I tried it, it's confusing as hell just what you want to do and overall quite boring. Guess it could be fun if you really get into it or like uber realism though.
