This used to be one of my favorite games back in the windows 95 (98 maybe..) days. It was really fun and not overly complicated. I know there are some online space sim type games, but as far as I can tell, they're way more complicated and include too many RPG/strategy elements. I'm not interested in trading or mining or any controlling a capitol ship or fleet or any other crazy bullshit.. I just wanna zoom around blasting aliens with lasers and missiles.

Lots of people want that. The newest one that is very similar to that would be Freespace 2, which is fairly old but a lot newer than any of the Wing Commander games.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 has some pretty fun parts where you can fly around in a starfighter and shoot other fighters, Same with Rogue Squadron for the GameCube.

In terms of modern games I think all you're going to find is X3 which like you said isn't all action. There are some trading parts too I haven't played it though.

There was a game called Freelancer that Microsoft published several years ago... it wasnt a console game, but it was very Wing Commander Privateer-esque. Very good game.

There really aren't any space flight sim games anymore, sim-oriented or not.

As mentioned in the thread, Freelancer (uses a weird mouse control scheme) and Freespace 2 (Excellent!!). EVE is an MMO similar to Freelancer.

There was also a (not bad) 360 game called Project Sylpheed.

Anything the mainstream gamer doesn't like is effectively dead. 4x strategy, adventure, space flight, flight sim, etc.

EVE is very much like Freelancer. Freelancer doesn't play like the other games I mentioned since a good 50% of your time is spent on auto-pilot or using the stupid mouse flight for fighting.

I really enjoyed Freelancer, and still have it installed and i play a mission or two every so often... add some custom mods to the game and its harder with cooler ships and weapons too
